Vanguard: Issue 129: Emissary of Evil!

In the city of dead gods, Vanguard faced the Dark Avatar inside the Temple of the Pantheon of Evil!

The interior of the unholy cathedral was filled with supernatural darkness! What scant light there was emanated from Sentinel’s failing, flickering energy shields. Through the darkness they saw more of the hybrid archeology of the human race across a great rectangular hall, 170 feet long, lined with towering pillars and statues of godlike figures! The ceiling was 100 feet high and in the center of the temple was a black altar, a massive, rectangular solid of obsidian-like stone. There were twelve statues, and there had been eleven stone pillars, each as big around as a mature redwood trunk. Now there were nine pillars.
(See map. Black circles are pillars. Red X’s mark the destroyed pillars. Black triangles mark the statues.)

The statues were familiar and strange; Gods and goddesses of Death and Hell, of Misery and Tragedy. Gods of Nightmare and Terror. Of Madness and Despair. Of Fear and Horror. Darkness and Shadow. Discord and Destruction. They were akin to Hades and Hecate, Hela and Loki, Set and Nergal, Yen-lo Wang and Mictian, Shiva, Morpheus and Thanatos.

Avatar and Menagerie saw that all of Earth’s many gods of Death were seemingly embodied in one of the statue figures. All the gods of Madness in another, all the gods of Destruction in a third, all the rulers of Hell in a fourth, all the Gods and of Darkness in a fifth, and on and on and on. This was the progenitor Pantheon of Evil. And in their sacristy stood their Dark Avatar and she was terrifying to behold.

Sentinel and Slingshot were already badly wounded but the Dark Avatar was unharmed and untroubled; her voice seductive and full of purring menace. “You are precisely where I want you to be; before my sacrificial altar, within my place of power. Even though you’ve managed to survive my Crimson Coven, you cannot hope to survive me. Abase yourselves, as these two slaves have,” she said pointing a cruel finger at Sentinel and Slingshot. “…And give me the Avatar. I won’t tell you again.”

Sentinel quickly briefed Vanguard on the plan to destroy the columns to bring down the temple. Then he faced her and said: “ With all of your power, why bother shielding your mind from me when I first felt your presence, I’d think you’d get a thrill out of giving me an inferiority complex… and with all of your power, why is the Avatar so important to you. If what we know about it is true, why would the “Gods of good” empowering him allow their gifts to be used for darkness and bestow them to you anyway. Why wouldn't they simply stop giving their gifts?”

The Dark Avatar ignored Sentinel’s first question but could not ignore the second.
“There are no gifts to give!” she snarled in contempt. “Insignificant slave! Cannot you comprehend that the Pantheon is destroyed, even as you stand among the ruin of their home dimension?!! Everything that they are has been laid waste! All that remains of that mystical civilization are the twelve gods of the Dark Pantheon…
…and the Avatar!”

The Dark Avatar could not resist sharing the delicious irony. Vanguard’s sorrow and hopelessness would give her exquisite pleasure. “Millennia ago, there was a war of the Gods. It raged across the cosmos and at long last, the Pantheon defeated their dark brothers and sisters. But due to their weak nature, the Pantheon could not bring themselves to destroy their enemies. Instead the Dark Pantheon was imprisoned alive! They could only be released by the power of the Pantheon,… which survives them in the form of their Avatar! “The return of the Avatar means the return of the Dark Pantheon!

“They shall be released! And then They will rage across the multiverse! All life forms shall know Their names and tremble in despair! At long last, my quest is nearly ended! I shall be the instrument through which my Masters will exact Their bloodthirsty revenge upon all who live!”

Soldier coolly scanned the proximity with his cybernetic senses, and found the church coursing with energy akin to that which the Coven wielded against Vanguard. The seasoned veteran took up a position alongside the stump of a felled column and prepared for combat to erupt! (OOC: Soldier evades)

Talon launched himself toward the temple ceiling with a quick thrust of his wings. He lets out a savage battle-cry as he barrels toward the Dark Avatar with his unsheathed claws poised to strike upon impact!
SLAASHH!! The talons raked her unholy armor, trailing sparks!

The Dark Avatar snarled “You dare lay hands on me?” and touched Talon with her gauntleted hand. “I, who am Death incarnate?!” (OOC: Death Touch! Talon makes one save and fails the other and loses ALL his Power Points! He is conscious but spent; fatigued as per the rules! All movement, carry capacity, saving throws, and damage inflicted are halved! Any further Power expenditures come off Hit Points!)

Zephyr gulped hard and strengthened her wind defense (Evades). She didn’t think she could generate enough wind to topple a column but desperately wanted to help. She waited for her opportunity to do so!

Sentinel quickly scanned the chamber with his energy sense. This temple was the source of the energy current that was connected to the site of the battle between Vanguard and the Crimson Coven. It was saturated with this energy and so was the Dark Avatar herself. Sentinel could see the Dark Avatar drawing energy from everything in this place. He detected no ‘gateway’ within his range.
Like Zephyr, he held his action and waited for the most opportune moment to strike!

Lightning Strike surveyed this dark temple and looked at Dark Avatar. "Your Crimson Coven was no match for Vanguard. Your evil will always fail when confronted with righteousness. You tried to demoralize us with lies and false visions to no avail. We will bring this temple down and you with it!"
With that Strike raged a blast of lightning at Dark Avatar! SHAKOW!! Her armor withstood the blast!

Slingshot knew the Dark Avatar understood his weakness. Scott would not be able to last long under her onslaught. He needed to find the way to take her power away from her. “Taking the whole temple down would take too long,” he thought. He didn't have that kind of time. He looked at this place. “It was a special place. An homage to all these gods. The evil gods. And She was getting power from them. Maybe taking down the temple was too much. Maybe simply taking down the statues of these gods would disrupt the energies? After all, this place was a siphon of energy and maybe the statues acted like antennas?”
Slingshot stretched two big arms out, firing his massive fists at two nearby statues, the gods of Nightmare and Destruction! KRASH! SMAASSH!

The Dark Avatar howled, “No! Heretic!!!” and then she moved again! Like Avatar, she was somehow supernaturally quickened! Seething, ebony fire limned her hands as she hissed, “I thought I already taught you.” Black flames flew from her hand at Slingshot again! Given his vulnerability (and that his Invulnerability was spent) it spelled certain doom for the malleable man of might! But…

Sentinel suddenly fired what little remained of his energy construct at the hand of the Dark Avatar, fouling her aim! Flames exploded near Slingshot, and missed him! The Dark Avatar growled in anger.

(Next combat turn!)

Avatar said, "Take it down, my friends...I'll make sure that she's occupied." Then, with the speed and strength gifted to him, he ran straight at the Dark Avatar, ramming her backwards into the altar! SLAM! Her enchanted armor took the brunt of it, but John locked limbs with her! "You forget that throughout time, in all cultures, all myth and all religions ultimately point to something better. You cannot kill hope!"

The Dark Avatar chuckled and said, “Just watch me.” She said more in a language John didn’t know, a magic incantation, and the Dark Avatar began to grow in size! Taller, larger, more massive until she was finally over 40 feet tall! (Imagine the Avengers and the FF vs. Galactus!)
She held Avatar with her right hand (ala Fay Wray) and her deep, sinister laughter echoed throughout the hall! “Watch me!”

Talon lunged at her despite his exhaustion, raking her armor again! ZGRAK! He damaged it!

Soldier fired his pistol from cover, hitting the gigantic Dark Avatar! BLAM! More damage to the armor!

Lightning Strike advanced and fired another lightning bolt at Dark Avatar! SHAKOW!! The attacks were taking their toll on her armor!

Symbiote questioned the extent of the Dark Avatar’s power. So much wasn’t adding up. The perceptive protector took another step forward, electricity now arcing between his hands. "Nothing here is what it seems to be, her least of all. I think it's time we called her bluff, "the Superheroic Simulator concluded, his voice raising. “Let's show this interdimensional bitch how we do things downtown!!"
And with that, he blasted a support column to smithereens! KRAKA-DOOM! Three pillars were destroyed!

Menagerie listened to his team mates and then assumed the shape of Bear, the mightiest of his forms! “GRRRR!!” He loped on all fours at a pillar and leaned into it with all his strength! He strained and pushed and finally, slowly succeeded in toppling the towering column! KRASH!! Four pillars destroyed! The roof dropped silt and dust.

Zephyr saw Avatar in peril and hurled herself on a hurricane blast at the Dark Avatar, ramming the shoulder of her body armor into the face of the multiverse’s manifestation of malice! WHAM! “Leave him alone, beyotch!”

The Dark Avatar’s eyes adjusted their focus upon something so small and so close. “I shall exterminate you like the annoying insect you are,” she spat. The eyeholes of her armored mask began to emit black flames and…

Slingshot stretched down the great hall and shattered three more statues with super strong pseudopods! KRAK! CRUNCH! BROK! (1 Luck Point) The statues of the gods of Fear and Madness and Conflagration were defiled!

When the statue of the God of Fear was destroyed, the pall of supernatural dread, that had only been fended off by Avatar’s nobility of spirit, vanished!

And when the statue of the God of Conflagration was destroyed, the black flames in Dark Avatar’s eyes were extinguished! The burning gaze directed at Zephyr would remain just that and nothing more.

The Dark Avatar turned her terrible attention toward Slingshot and the five desecrated statues.

Sentinel took Slingshot’s lead! Unable to damage a pillar in his weakened condition, the beacon of light and hope grabbed some broken statuary and used it to smash the head off the stone statue of the Goddess of Darkness! KRAK!
When the statue of the Goddess of Darkness was destroyed, the supernatural dark that obscured the hall was suddenly lifted! At the far end of the hall stood Mirage, Okmenhotep, the Wraith, Plague and Baron Samedi, revealed for all to see! They seemed content to watch the battle. For now. Six statues destroyed. Six remaining.

Zephyr yelled, “Ha-, er, Symbiote was right! She’s nowhere near omnipotent. Not even in her place of power!” The air elemental made air quotes around ‘place of power.’

Avatar didn’t miss a beat. Within her massive fist, unable to grapple her, the myrmidon of mythology pulled the spear off his back and grimly plunged it into her gigantic hand! GRASH!! The spear drove through her iron gauntlet and drew blood!

The Dark Avatar gasped in surprise and opened her hand, dropping Avatar 40 feet to the ground!

Avatar (makes his Agility save) tumbled upon landing, taking no damage from the fall!

The Dark Avatar surveyed the shattered statues of the Dark Pantheon and grimly cast another black spell. This one summoned into existence a translucent, mystical energy wall between the battle and the remaining statues (see map)! VER-RANG! It ranged to the walls and ceiling. She placed herself on the same side of the barrier as Vanguard, so she could continue murdering them!
“I’ve still more than enough power left to make all of you beg for mercy,” she promised.

Moments earlier…
Clone was deep in sacred prayer. Then he secretly divided in two. The first moved directly and without hesitation toward the titanic Dark Avatar!
The second Clone disappeared silently down the stone stairwell. It was pitch black, the only illumination came from the led screen for his Vanguard communicator. At the first landing down, he found a thin dark stone hallway, and another spiral of dank stairs that descended further. The stench below, and the soft murmuring echoes that ran through the hall helped him choose the hall. Clone moved swiftly down its length. The crawlspace of a corridor divided and branched and he followed the voices through the twists and turns.
Suddenly, behind him, a translucent energy barrier descended through the stone! He was cut off from the others! There was no going back. Forging onward, he found himself ascending another spiral stairwell until he emerged at the main level again, only now at the opposite end of the unholy temple! (see map)

He saw the black energy barrier cut the Temple in half as well. He was separated from everyone except Okmenhotep, Plague, Mirage, the Wraith and Baron Samedi! It was their echoing voices that he had followed through the labyrinthine lower level! They did not notice his arrival and continued talking.

Mirage complained, “I’ll wager she’ll do it. She’ll massacre all those stupid bloody chavs.”

Okmenhotep said in English, “If she does, she’ll sacrifice the Avatar on that altar and release the Dark Pantheon into the worlds again. Only this time, there will be nothing to keep them in check.”

Plague buzzed writhing, loathsome disapproval.

Mirage groused, “She promised the power of the Avatar to us. His immortality. As payment for our bloody services!”

Baron Samedi chided, “Well what did you expect boy?! Makin a deal wid the @#$%& devil herself at de crossroads! Hahahaha!”

Mirage said, “What did I expect?! I expected to live forever. And be filthy stinking rich. The Dark Pantheon destroying the multiverse and all could put a bit of a crimp in that plan.”

Soldier’s cybernetic hearing heard all of that too! He saw Clone glance through the barrier at the Dark Avatar towering over Vanguard.

“I’ve more than enough power left to make all of you beg for mercy,” she promised.
To be continued!

Replies/Actions?!

Please let me know your plans for your next one combat action, except for Avatar whose (fading) Heightened Speed gives him two actions.

At this point you all still have free will.
Thanks!
Have fun.

Slingshot:
OOC:
"At this point you all still have free will."

That's one way of ending a turn. :)

--------------------------------------------------

Soldier:
I'll use the column as cover, and take aim at the ceiling above Dark Avatar, and let loose a pair of Explosive Rounds, Even if the blast doesn't catch her, it should do some damage to the ceiling. As I fire, I call out to the other members of Vanguard, "The ceiling, hit the ceiling over her head!"

--------------------------------------------------

Menagerie:
[OOC] Wonderful issue!!!
Can Menagerie hear or smell the others on the other side of the barrier. Can he fit in Bear form down the stairs and through the passages ways.

I am thinking about have Menagerie follow the second Clone but want to make sure there is a reason he would look for the stairs. With the darkness lifted he should be able to see the stairs from where he is, right?

Via Vanguard
and safe travel my friend

OOC:
Hi,
Menagerie can see the stairs that Clone took downstairs.
He can see the Coven members on the opposite side. He can hear that they are talking but not what they are saying. He can see a Clone on the other side.He can't smell anything through the barrier because it stinks of sulphur.

fyi, If Bear goes below he won't squeeze through the stone rabbit warren down there. You'll need a different shape.

Best,
Jeff

Sentinel:
OOC: I second that comment. Great issue!

I was more than pleased with all the good stuff Kirk got to do in his current state.

And I had an idea for inanimate construct creation: First I thought I'd create one on the other side of the mystical energy barrier to take out a statue or two by materializing them in the same space that the statue(s) occupied.

Then I wondered if perhaps materializing it in the same space as the mystical energy barrier might actually destabilize the spell and destroy the field - does that sound possible?

Also, is there any chance that creating the animate construct in the same space as the barrier might destabilize the spell (the construct itself would have minimal effect as a weapon - so unless it had something to do with Kirk's energy occupying the same space creating more than usual havoc ...)

Thanks.
Seth

Slingshot:
[OOC] The next step for me would be to take down the other statues and further lessen the dark avatar. Especially with the pounding I got. There are enough on this side to be able to take her down

So without doing meta gaming.. Can I see through the barrier? Did I notice that Clone went to the other side from the staircase?

Just trying to see what my options are for the moment.

--------------------------------------------------

GM:
OOC: Thanks guys. Below are replies/clarifications to Everyone, Slingshot and Sentinel.

Everyone:
To clarify, Dark Avatar’s mystical wall is translucent black. Everyone can see through it.

Menagerie, due to his position near the stairs, saw Clone sneak down the stairs. Then, his Heightened Senses enabled him to detect the second Clone on the other side of the barrier.

Soldier’s cybernetic senses helped him detect the second Clone on the other side of the barrier. He doesn’t know how he got there.

Slingshot is closest to the barrier and is actually facing the second Clone, so I will rule that he detects him as well. But, like Soldier, Slingy didn’t see him go down the staircase, so he doesn’t know how he got there.

Finally, the first Clone is also aware that the second Clone made it to the other side, due to his Heightened Sense / empathic link to other Clones.

No other Vanguard member has detected the second Clone.
Of course, any of those that did detect him can inform the rest of Vanguard. But they might inform the Dark Avatar at the same time.

Slingshot:
You're not metagaming. That was a fair question.

Also, there are no unbroken statues left on your side of the barrier. (see map)
There are two unbroken pillars though. You'll recall that your engineering skill told you you’d need to destroy the inner 8 columns to topple this structure (ie: the 8 pillars that form the inner rectangle of the temple)
Thanks.

Sentinel:
As per the rules, you can create inanimate objects for 2 Power Points. These don’t take an action to create, only 1/3 of your maximum movement. Each Creation Point put into it gives it a hit point and up to 50 lbs. of weight. You could make any inanimate object; a sword, chair, hammer, house (with enough Creation Points), you name it.

If you put any construct inside a statue, it would attack the statue as a Brawling Weapon, ie: weight determines damage as a bludgeon.

You have no idea what would happen if you put a construct inside the mystical barrier.

Thanks.
Best,
Jeff

--------------------------------------------------

Slingshot:
[OOC: I guess I'll be the first to go. I reserve the right to change my move if more info is sent my way. :) - Since I don't have the way to the other side figured out yet, I'll do my next move]

Slingshot sees Clone across the way. "How did he get there?" Scott says sotto voce. He turns and sees the Dark Avatar huge and neatly standing between the two remaining pillars. As he continues to search for Clone's exit, he smiles. Time to give something back.

[OOC: Pull the two remaining pillars on top of that slimy b*tch. If I recall properly, I was able to get two in one turn. I also want to spend a chunk of my move figuring out how to go to the other side.]

--------------------------------------------------

Sentinel:
If it appears that sound can pass through the wall, or if the wall comes down this would be Kirk’s dialogue to the Coven (perhaps he could amply his voice with a megaphone creation if it would help to reach them):

Kirk finally noticed Samedi and what was left of the Coven. He knew Samedi would be prance with glee as he marched to his own execution … he didn’t think the rest of the Coven would be so accommodating; perhaps they just needed some prodding.

“Hey Samedi! Knew you’d make it to the endgame, Smiley. So how’s that quest for the power of the Avatar working out for you and your cronies?”
“I’ve got one last bellyacher for you,” and Kirk continued speaking to Samedi but really for the benefit of the rest of the Coven, “First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.” Kirk paused a second and then added, “ So tell me, where do you think you all fit into the equation with The Dark Pantheon’s Scorched Earth policy?”

Actions:
Kirk tries to use the pillar as a barrier between himself and the Dark Avatar while plausible.

Kirk will use some of his movement to summon his energy and create an inanimate wall within the mystical barrier created by the Dark Avatar. He will maintain the three point shield currently around him, but use whatever remaining creation points are available to manifest it. It’s Kirk’s belief that his energy is a form of universal energy (building blocks of creation) and that currently once he summons it he knows how to form and manipulate it in a specific way – he is hoping that bringing that energy in its raw form and into immediate contact and in the same space as the mystical barrier is going to disrupt the barrier. He will focus the energy on the part of wall nearest him and in a size that would allow Vanguard to pass from one side of the temple to the other (ie in case this works to some degree and the whole wall doesn’t come down, hopefully part of it would be disrupted to let them get to the other side – and all the better if the wall keeps the Dark Avatar from taking shots at them while they dismantle the rest of the temple supports and statues).

If this actually works to any degree that it can help the team, Kirk will mutter something in surprise to himself astonished at the results. He will go into the other side of the temple.

If he can make it to the other side whether from the above or from the wall coming down some other way, he will use the debris to try to smash another statue physically.

If he is stuck on this side of the wall and nothing better presents itself, he would manifest another inanimate creation within one of the statues on the other side of the wall, hopefully causing its destruction (might be a cool panel as one of the statues seemingly crumbles or explodes for no apparent reason).

If anything more useful presents itself for Kirk to do, feel free to have him do it. If he still has an action left because he can’t get to the other side and there is nothing he can do to assist anyone on this side, etc, he’d likely use his action to evade.

I'm assuming per what you said that manifesting each inanimate object requires 1/3 movement and power point expenditure, but isn't my actual action. If that is wrong, you still have the progression of what he'd try to work with depending on everything else that happens, etc.

Thanks.

Best,
Seth

Soldier:
OOC: Other than Clone, do I detect anyone else in the area, and is he in danger of being struck by the blast from my explosive rounds? IC: Once Soldier detects Clone, he yells out. "Be careful, Clone's on the other side of the barrier. We need to get him out of there!"

--------------------------------------------------

Clone:
OOC: Am I correct in assuming that it would take just one of Clone's duplicates to topple over one of the statues and thus destroy it? Or is it too big for just one duplicate to deal with? Does Clone have any idea about how many duplicates it would take ( if indeed it did require more than one ) to topple one over?
-Kev

--------------------------------------------------

GM:
OOC:
Hi Dom/Soldier. Anyone in an adjacent hex to Dark Avatar might be in danger if the roof over her collapses. See map.

Hi Kev/Clone. The statues are heavy and their bases are wide. One man might be able to topple one. Two men should definitely do the job.
Clone saw Sentinel break a statue by using the broken limb of another, broken statue as a stone club.

Best,
Jeff

--------------------------------------------------

Symbiote:
Sorry this has taken so much time, little busy lately, but let's roll this thing!! I'll keep it simple: Since everybody else seems to be doing a nice job of smashing the temple, I'll toss a lightning bolt at Dark Avatar herself.

Viva Vanguard,

Greg

--------------------------------------------------

Avatar:
While it's unoriginal and not seeming to work as I'd planned, Avatar will continue to attack Dark Avatar to try and keep her attacks off of other members of Vanguard while they go about their respective actions.

--------------------------------------------------

Menagerie:
Menagerie will change into his human form. He runs to the stairs and heads toward where he thinks Clone is. He will come out to where Clone was and hold his action. He will assess what the Coven is doing.

If he sees an opportunity to use his Charisma to convince the Coven to join Vanguards side he will. He will even spend half a luck point for his Charisma to have a positive effect on the Coven members.

[IC] This is not a fight between good and evil. Nor is it a fight between life and death. It is a fight between existence and destruction. No one can side on the sideline when the stakes are this high. What does the Coven gain if all there is … is nothing?

Via Vanguard
Tom

--------------------------------------------------

Lightning Strike:
Strike surveys the mystical wall blocking him off and tries to figure out a way to get to the other side of it. My actions depend on how much Strike does or does not know.

If he knows that Clone is on the other side of the barricade and if Clone has a communicator then Strike will assume electrical form and attempt to project himself wirelessly into Clones communicator and emerge on the other side. Once he emerges on the other side he will materialize and hopefully assist clone in knocking down another statue.

If he is unaware of Clone's location then he will attempt to probe the barrier to see if he can determine its nature and if he may be able to pass through it in electrical form without using one of the communicators. If he can't pass through it, he will simply blast Dark Avatar.

--------------------------------------------------
Clone:
Clone 1: As Clone makes his way towards the Dark Avatar he finds his previous feelings of fear being drowned beneath a torrent of courage. As his pace quickens he reminds himself that evil; true evil, thrives on the fear and self doubt of its enemies – he will feed this creatures insatiable apatite no longer. Increasing his pace he reaches down to the ground and grabs the nearest piece of broken column that he can lift and heaves it high above his head ( OOC: I’m assuming with all these broken statues and busted columns that there’s probably a few broken pieces of stone scattered around the floor ). He then looks up at the evil giant standing before him as says ( in Ukrainian ), “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, . . .”

His gradually increasing step suddenly turns into an all out charge as he rapidly closes on his target. Leaping into the air he does his best to drive the broken piece of stone he picked into the emissary of evil – the Dark Avatar! As the stone in his hands comes crashing down towards the Dark Avatar, Clone shouts ( in Ukrainian ), “ . . . but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty!”

Clone 2: Staring at the remaining grim and distorted statues erected in honor of the gods of the dark pantheon, Clone knew what it was that he had to do. Taking a few steps backward; to keep out of sight of the four nearby Crimson Coven members, Clone quickly filled the small room he was in with ten more duplicates of himself ( OOC: that should make twelve I believe ). After the duplicates were all formed they simply turned to look at each other, and then nodded in silent agreement – the statues had to be destroyed.

Ten of the Clones raced out from the confines of the small room they were hiding in and charged towards five of the statues. The first two Clones attempted to topple the statue closest to the stairway, while four others headed down in two man teams towards the two closest to the energy barrier that the Dark Avatar had created. Another team of two raced over to the statue directly opposite the room they were just standing in; while the remaining three Clones do their best to blister passed the four members of the Crimson Coven in an attempt to take down the statue closest to Baron Samedi.

OOC: I have a gut feeling Clone may not be able to pull all of that off ( who knows though – weirder things have happened ), but with any luck the swarm of duplicates will be able to weaken the Dark Avatar enough ( through their acts of vandalism ) so that the energy barrier drops and the other members of Vanguard will be able to come help him finish the job ;) Sorry again for the one day delay. As soon as all this icky winter stuff decides to leave us alone I should be able to post much earlier then I have been.

Talk to you all soon – hope everyone is safe and sound,

-Kev

--------------------------------------------------

Talon:
Talon will try to summon the strength to attack Dark Avatar in whatever capacity he can manage.

Thanks,
Denny

Vanguard: Issue 128: City on the Edge of Forever!

Vanguard had awoken from a madhouse into a strange, otherworldly landscape where they were ambushed by the Crimson Coven, and defeated them! The team then divided.
In the lost city of the gods, Sentinel and Slingshot faced the Dark Avatar inside the Temple of Evil!

From the opposite end of the long hall she faced them. Her voice was seductive and her proposition straightforward: “Serve me.”

The exhausted Sentinel put on a brave face and used what dwindling power he had left to create a massive energy construct depicting WWII era soldiers and civilians, singing “Over There!” as they attacked the pillars!
WHAMM! Sentinel’s energy reserves still managed to destroy the center of one the pillars, causing the upper half of the pillar to come down! BOOMM!

Slingshot looked around. He knew construction. He knew how to build things and how to tear them down. The malleable man of might wrapped his arms around two of the pillars and pulled with all of his strength! Straining hard, he knew these pillars were meant to withstand Armageddon. Then KERRACK!! THOOOM! The hero toppled one of the pillars with his bare hands and watched it crash to the floor!

The Dark Avatar was not amused. “Pathetic insects. You dare oppose me? Get on your knees!”
Black flames from hell flew from her hand and blasted Slingshot! VWOOSSHHH!
(Vulnerability triggers double damage! 42 points of damage! 8 from Invulnerabilty. Roll with 7. 27 off hits! Slingshot retains consciousness!) Slingshot would have flown backwards 100 feet except for the stone wall 40 feet behind him! SLAMM! (another 6 off hit points) Slingy crashed into the wall and fell to the ground, still awake.

Then the Dark Avatar attacked again! The same ebony fire burst from her hands and engulfed America’s beacon of liberty in a crackling conflagration of destruction! VROOSH!! (25 points of damage! Your shields take it all, but they are the same energy as your current constructs)

“Fool. Employing illusions to confuse one such as I, is like trying to drown Poseidon.”

Sentinel’s shields and the energy constructs of America’s armed forces were blasted into disintegration! Sentinel’s remaining shields could no longer support his weight to keep him aloft and he fell to the temple floor hard! WHAM!

“That’s better,” the Dark Avatar said at the two prostrate figures before her. She walked slowly toward them like she had all the time in the world.

Slingshot and Sentinel were severely wounded and she wasn’t even breathing hard. Home field advantage didn’t begin to describe this place, let alone this plane of existence. There was no cause remaining for hope. Their prospects were as black as their foe’s malevolent soul.
--------------
Earlier, Lightning Strike, Soldier, Talon and Zephyr had crossed the weird wilderness searching for Sentinel and Slingshot! They entered the ruin of the lost ancients. They came into a large open area near the center of the World’s Ending, what might have once been a gathering place of the gods. There was a great temple before them whose architecture was a dizzying amalgam of the pantheons of the world. The temple was black and, unlike everything around it, not in a state of ruin!

Before the heroes could act, the mist that covered the stone ground of the entire ruin, perhaps this entire world, undulated and writhed and within its vaporous tendrils, they could see images… visions.

Lightning Strike shook off the terrible prophecy of the future. Having been fooled once before by a bleak vision, he wasn't going to fall for it again. He spoke to the small band of heroes. "These visions are no more real than what we experienced earlier. Something or someone is attempting to convince us that our futures are filled with despair. We can change our futures and are not subject to the whims of fate. I suggest we continue to the temple to try and find some answers. "

These words helped Strike’s teammates shake off their mirages of clairvoyance and they all raced for the temple! As they closed, they heard noises emanating from it; the sounds of a pitched battle!
--------------
Earlier, Avatar, Clone, Menagerie and Symbiote had stayed behind to interrogate Warlock and get some answers. Then Menagerie used his mystic power and this unnatural environment to learn more of Avatar’s origin!

They crossed the barren wilderness. Soon they might have been a quarter mile from the city! From here they could see the mysterious megalopolis at last! A massive city of an impossibly advanced civilization, cast in ruin! (imagine Asgard after Ragnarok, if you dare!) The city and the dream it represented were utterly broken asunder. Entwined within the fallen towers of stone and steel could be seen subtle Greek motifs within the unrecognizable, futuristic architecture.

SKRAAA! Menagerie took the form of Eagle and soared into the scarlet sky!
From his sharp eyes saw movement within the city. Tiny figures on foot, near its center.
Spiraling outward, he spied a crater in the misty wilderness, not far from his group. Descending, he found it covered with footprints, at least six sets walking around the area!
Two sets left the crater in the direction of the mysterious metropolis.
Tracking those footprints from the air proved hard due to the mist that seemingly covered this world. It would have to be done from the ground.

Menagerie returned to the group and gave his scouting report. “I suggest we travel to the crater and track our friends from there."

Avatar said, "I agree. Forward is the way to go."

Symbiote agreed. “Let's find them.”

Clone was uncharacteristically quiet and nodded agreement. Something seemed to be bothering him and he didn't do a good job of hiding it from the others. He continually scanned the landscape, expecting other creatures from myth and folklore to appear, but none did. Not even the Baba Yaga.
With Menagerie in the lead, the four heroes hurriedly followed the tracks into the ruin of the lost ancients! Upon passing beneath the shattered titanic towers of stone and steel they could see the silent city better. Clearer somehow. For now within the architecture they saw Greek motifs, and Norse motifs, and Babylonian motifs, and Chinese and Aztec and Ancient Egyptian and African and Incan and more. All entwined and interlaced. Avatar’s archeology skill identified elements of every known ancient culture on Earth! Menagerie likewise identified symbols from every culture. Symbiote continued to detect no electrical power here, and Clone couldn’t help but recall the words of the wicked Warlock: “Surrender! This plane of existence intersects with all dimensions in the multiverse! Can you even comprehend that?! You stand before the nexus of infinity, with the understanding of an ant!”
(from the now-classic Issue 126! –Ye Ed)

It was Ragnarok and Armageddon and the Apocalypse and the Fall and The Death of the Gods and among this unimaginable scale and disaster wandered four tiny figures who tracked the footprints toward the heart of the cataclysm. (OOC: Our heroes make their Cool rolls thanks to Avatar’s noble powers.)
The footprints in the ash and dust that covered the city’s floor led our heroes into a large open area near the center of the World’s Ending, what might have once been a gathering place of the gods. There was a great temple before them whose architecture was a dizzying amalgam of the pantheons of the world. The temple was black and, unlike everything around it, not in a state of ruin!

Avatar was drawn to this obsidian structure, and everyone saw figures entering its doorway!

Before the heroes could act, the mist that covered the stone ground of the entire ruin, perhaps this entire world, undulated and writhed and within its vaporous tendrils, they could see images… visions!

In the mist, Avatar saw his accursed fate! He was the automaton puppet of long-dead masters, the architects of this doomed city. Fated to endlessly repeat a purposeless existence until the ending of the universe, he was not Heracles, but Sisyphus! Or Tantalus! Doomed to a living purgatory, he was the butt of the universe’s black cosmic joke. He was a man utterly without meaning! His pointless and trivial trials and tribulations had led to nothing! And they would always lead there. Then John saw his own future where he finally discovered the cause of his amnesia: despairing, anguished, and wishing it all to end, John had damaged his own memory that he might forget all of this and try to finally live as a man. It was John’s only hope for happiness, and for peace!

In the mist, Clone saw his future! The Soviets had recaptured him and dragged him back to the Orwellian hell of Moscow! He was restrained in a large dark prison cell before Hammer, Sickle, the new Cosmonaut and the new Siberian. Somehow, his super powers did not work! From the shadows came a voice he knew to be Dr. X. The voice said in Russian, “Did you think we would ever stop? That we would ever give up? We’ve invested far too much in you already, Alexi. Sadly, you’ve proven twice that you cannot be trusted. So we will need other methods to put your powers at our disposal!”
Dr. X spoke a trigger word that caused Alexi to involuntarily create a new body! The newly formed Clone was seized and dragged onto an operating table in the same cement room where Alexi was held. He was strapped down and dissected alive by Dr. X while Alexi watched in horror! When the screams finally stopped, the silhouette of Dr. X calmly wiped blood from his hands, recorded his notes and said, “Again.”

In the mist, Menagerie saw his future! It was inevitable. Over the years, he became less and less of a man and more a member of the animal kingdom, until he finally withdrew from human contact. Nature’s Defender came to the same inexorable conclusion that the Primate did: the animal kingdom would never be safe as long as the human race existed. Menagerie saw himself in the future, standing along Pachyderm, Snow Leopard and others, saying: “Humans of this world, I am Menagerie. Your cruel stewardship of Earth is ended. A new era has begun. No longer will you be permitted to destroy this planet, threatening all the life forms upon it with your shortsighted and insatiable avarice. No longer will you murder my brethren for sport or pleasure or fashion. No longer will we be your slaves. No. Your time here is ended. A new world is dawning, a green world where the harmony of nature is restored.”

In the mist, Symbiote saw his future! His Harness continued to stretch and warp his DNA until finally his DNA was permanently damaged beyond recovery! Hal was out with his family at their favorite restaurant when suddenly he felt his body transform out of control into a ghastly amalgam of all the beings he had ever sampled! The feral animal head of Hyena, the stretchable skin of Slingshot, wings and claws of Talon, the electricity of Lightning Strike sparking off him as his body violently divided from the power of Clone, his face actually splitting in half as he screamed in insensate agony. A thing, a freak, the grotesque result of his own scientific hubris and recklessness! His mind was broken from the shock and he lunged across the dinner table in blind fury at his father and Shelly!

Then the visions broke! (Avatar’s power enables the heroes to withstand these nightmarish illusions)
The heroes shook off the mirages of prophecy and ran for the temple! The figures were no longer visible in the doorway!

------------

Upon an unknown world that intersected with all worlds, within a ruined city of long-dead gods, Vanguard was reunited inside the black temple that was the only structure to survive Gotterdammerung!

The destroyed energy constructs of America’s WW2 fighting effort were replaced with real, flesh and blood heroes who arrived in two waves! Lightning Strike, Solider, Talon and Zephyr burst in first, followed quickly by Avatar, Clone, Menagerie and Symbiote! There, they found Slingshot and Sentinel splayed at their feet! Two of Vanguard’s most powerful members were on the ground and severely injured, but conscious! Slingshot had one arm wrapped around a massive stone pillar that had come down! Another pillar had been destroyed from the center outward.

The interior of the unholy cathedral was filled with supernatural darkness! What light there was emanated from Sentinel’s failing, flickering energy shields.

The statues were familiar and strange; the same sensation of cultural fusion and lost memory that possessed the dead city. These figures were gods, but not those of Olympus or Valhalla or Heaven. These were the others. Gods and goddesses of Death and Hell, of Misery and Tragedy.

(OOC: See image! Cool rolls upon sight! All succeed, thanks to Avatar’s power)

Avatar felt startling recognition of her, and Menagerie’s magical senses detected the Dark Avatar was drawing vast mystical strength from the temple. It was her place of power!

The Dark Avatar was unharmed and untroubled; her voice seductive and full of purring menace. “You are precisely where I want you to be; before my sacrificial altar, within my place of power. Even though you’ve managed to survive my Crimson Coven, you cannot hope to survive me. Abase yourselves, as these two slaves have,” she said pointing a cruel finger at the badly beaten Sentinel and Slingshot.
“…And give me the Avatar. I won’t tell you again.”

OOC:
Replies/Actions?!

At this point you all still have free will.
Please let me know your plans for your next two combat actions, except for Clone, Menagerie and Symbiote who entered the temple last. Those three only get one combat action next issue.
Yes, Avatar entered with this last group but his (fading) Heightened Speed gives him two actions.

Thanks!
Have fun.
Viva Vanguard… I hope!
Jeff

Sentinel:
Kirk hit the temple floor hard, but considered himself very fortunate. Had his shields failed to absorb the impact of the blast he wouldn’t be conscious … perhaps ever again. Kirk reassessed his situation and realized he was spent. Summoning his remaining energy would be little more than a light show at this point. Truly, this was the place that hope came to die.

As the heroic images he had summoned from his heart dissipated they were replaced by flesh and blood heroes. Vanguard was here. All of them!

Kirk smiled, his hope renewed.

They needed to know what he and Slingshot knew. At the sight of them, Kirk spoke with a power and determination is his voice. If this was Ragnarok, Gotterdammerung, there were no other companions he’d choose at his side.

“I knew you’d make it... and just in time. The Dark Avatar hit us with visions of our greatest fear first; if she tries it on you, reject it. We thought our best option was to cut off her power source; we’re trying to bring down this temple. Slingshot determined the supports were the main pillars (Kirk shot an affirmative nod towards Slingshot) and we managed to take out two of them; in that same moment she took down both of us in separate attacks. And then you showed up. It was my hope that the antithesis of what this place stands for .. things like self-sacrifice and positive inspiration and good, might serve as an effective focus against it, but it appears that this is the place that hope goes to die.” And then Kirk added with a smile, “Until now.”

Kirk turned to the Dark Avatar and said, “Two things I don’t get. With all of your power, why bother shielding your mind from me when I first felt your presence, I’d think you’d get a thrill out of giving me an inferiority complex… and with all of your power, why is the Avatar so important to you. If what we know about it is true, why would the “Gods of good” empowering him allow their gifts to be used for darkness and bestow them to you anyway. Why wouldn't they simply stop giving their gifts?” Kirk hoped to get the Dark Avatar monologing to give them something more.

And if the gifts of good could be used malevolently, might they be able to somehow use the energy of this place positively?

Kirk turned his energy sense towards the interior of the temple to see if he missed something, to be sure there were still no other entities arriving or around, to see if there were any other sources of energy stirring (other than the altar focus) and to try to understand if possible how the gateway or nexus to this area worked … was there any way he could tap into the power coming together at this place or somehow access more of his energy than he had any natural right to do so? How did time and space arrive and depart here?

OOC: Glad to have everyone back and very anxious to hear what happened to everyone when Jeff allows ... the above should fill everyone in on what you need to know for the moment per Sentinel & Slingshot's doings...

Unless you guys or his energy sense give anything more to our current predicament, he's likely going to try to take out more of the support structure, but I'll hold my actual actions until I hear everyone's dialogue, etc.

Best,
Seth

Avatar:
IC: John looks around, absorbing what Kirk has said and the temple itself, as well as the Dark Avatar standing before Vanguard. An understanding comes over him and he nods to himself.

"Take it down, my friends...I'll make sure that she's occupied."

With the speed and strength gifted to him, John runs straight at the Dark Avatar, seeking to enfold her in a wrestler's embrace and take her down, hopefully occupying her apparently-terrible power while his friends hit the other pillars. If possible, he'll use his active powers to ram her into the edge of the altar for as much damage as possible.

While grappling with her, John cries out, "You forget that throughout time, in all cultures, all myth and all religions ultimately point to something better. You cannot kill hope!"

OOC: He'll try to take her down with some damage and hold her down while doing some sort of HTH damage, if possible. Primary concern is to contain her while the others can freely work on pillars, taking whatever attacks that she might have (even though he's low on both hp and PR). If self-sacrifice is the name of the game, then that's what he'll do, even to the point of holding her down while the temple collapses upon them.

--------------------------------------------------

Symbiote:
IC: Hal listens to Sentinel's update of events before the arrival of his group, and watches as the fleet-fooded Avatar attacks his evil counterpart.

"They're both right, you know," he says to the other heroes assembled around him. "Whoever or whatever Dark Avatar is, she's definitely from the Dimension Of Trying Too Hard."

Symbiote continues, taking a step forward. "Think about it: Why all this 'theater?' Why try to trick us into thinking we were insane first, then send those Coven losers after us, then try to psyche us out with our greatest fears?"

Hal extends his hands slightly to his side, and begins generating a nimbus of lightning around both of them. "If she were really that powerful and wanted Avatar that badly, why didn't she just yank him out of our reality and into this one and do what she wanted with him? Why this protracted dog and pony show for our benefit?"

He takes another step forward, electricity now arcing between his hands. "Nothing here is what it seems to be, her least of all. I think it's time we called her bluff, "the Superheroic Simulator concludes, his voice raising. The whole situation reminds him of one of his favorite movies, and he can't help paraphrasing it, shouting "Let's show this interdimensional bitch how we do things downtown!!"

And with that, he begins blasting away at a support column.

OOC: Lightning Strike, as we throw our lightning bolts let's try not to cross the streams. It could be Very Bad. ;)

Viva Vanguard,

Greg

--------------------------------------------------

Menagerie:
Menagerie listens closely to his teammates, nods and transforms into his Bear form. "Grr" as he charges towards a column. He will attempt to destroy the column. If he isn't strong enough to damage it then he will assist Avatar.

OOC: Wow this is awesome! I can't wait to catchup on what has happened to the others. Dark Avatar is going down!!!

Regards
Tom

--------------------------------------------------

Soldier:
As Soldier, and the rest of the group, enter the ruins, he'll immediately scan the area with his sensors looking for any threats, as well as for signs of his missing teammates. If he spots anyone, he'll alert the group to their presence. If no threats are detected, he'll continue to quickly, but carefully, continuously observing the path ahead of them, as well as occasionally turning to make sure they're not being followed. With Strike's assurance that what they're seeing is nothing more than a mere illusion, he'll begin to pick up the pace, and head toward the sounds of battle.

Upon entering the structure, Soldier will immediately scan the building for anything out of the "ordinary", if he doesn't detect anything threats, he'll greet the rest of his teammates, and brief them on what's happened so far, as well as listening to what they've encountered. He agrees that something about this whole situation is "off", but can't quite put his finger on it. Once the group starts to react, he'll try to place himself along one of the walls, near the entrance to the temple so that his back is facing the wall, but where he'll have clear view of the rest of the temple. He'll save an action, and prepare to evade any attack, in response to the lightning bolt, and or any other actions Vanguard takes against the temple.

--------------------------------------------------

Sentinel:
Hi Jeff.

Kirk will move towards the altar to see if he can get any better energy sense readings and try to stay alert to any changes on that take place or of of new entities coming into their vicinity. He will quickly alert the team.

For his physical actions - at this point should he re-energize, from what I can tell he'd be doing no better than HTH damage - about all he could do was fly for a few rounds... so he will not re-energize and instead hold his actions until he can do something useful in this order:
(1) If it appears the Dark Avatar is about to blast someone (likely Avatar) and he can mess up that attack, he will do so:
(a) use what little is left of his energy to physically move the direction of her blast (and if possible direct the energy towards damaging the pillars supporting the temple (this could be as simply as an energy arm knocking into her arm - three points should still carry 150 lbs which should still be able to knock someone's arm, particularly when it is unexpected)
(b) try to tap into reading her mind again, this may not throw off her attack, but if she noticed it, it might mess up her attack to prevent his 'read' again - if he actually makes contact, then perhaps they'll learn something useful --- and if he actually does make contact any movement left will be to use the pillars as a shield so if she comes after him, hopefully she'll be blocked by them or part of her attack will do damage to the temple (with the rules being the way they are, if this route appears most possible, he can place himself behind one of the pillars before making the attempt).

If it seems neither of those options will work or are possible, then Kirk will pick up anything he can find in the temple to use as a battering ram or weapon that will allow him to supplement his own physical strength and damage the pillars further without it damaging himself (any maces or medieval weapons or instruments to service the temple around that he can find - anything he can use to better pound on a pillar).

Although he may hold his actions until the last moment to see if he can do something more useful, he won't just let them 'go', at the very least he will do whatever he can to damage the temple supports ... and he will encourage the rest of Vanguard to do so also. If Slingshot or anyone else comes up with any methods where they can combine their efforts for better effect, Kirk will cooperate ... whatever he can do in this regard, he will do.

Best,
Seth

Slingshot:
Jeff.. One question: The statues: Are they close to a column? I'm considering breaking one as well as a column. (Trying to figure out if the statues focus the magic)

--------------------------------------------------

GM:
Hi Stephane.

Yes.
The statues are against the wall between the columns.
On the attached map, statues are the black triangles. The columns are the black circles.

The four statues closest to Vanguard seem to be depictions of gods or goddesses of: Nightmare, Destruction, Fear and Darkness.

Best,
Jeff

--------------------------------------------------

Slingshot:
The whole team was here now. This Dark Avatar had his number. Scott would not be able to last long under her onslaught.

He needed to find the way to take her power away from her. Taking the whole temple down would take too long. He didn't have this kind of time. He looked at this place. It was a special place. An homage to all these gods. The evil gods. and She was getting power from them.

Maybe taking down the temple was too much. Maybe simply taking down the statues of these gods would disrupt the energies? After all this place was a siphon of energy and maybe the statues acted like antennas?

[OOC: Slingshot will take down/destroy the statues. As many as possible (2-3?). After taking down the first, if the avatar reacts. I will use a luck point to be extra successful or be able to take an extra one of them.]
--------------------------------------------------

Talon:
Hello Everyone,

Upon hearing the threats made by Dark Avatar, Talon launches himself toward the temple ceiling with a quick thrust of his wings. He let's out a savage battle-cry as he barrels toward the Dark Avatar with his unsheathed claws poised to strike upon impact.

OOC: Talon will use his airborne agility to strike at her and draw her attention from Avatar and the rest of the group. He's hoping his speed in flight will make it difficult for her to attack him and allow the rest of the group time to attack the temple and hopefully weaken her powers within.

Sorry for the delays, Jeff. I'm glad to be back.

Viva Vanguard,

Denny

--------------------------------------------------

Clone:
( OOC: Outside the temple ) As the images before Clone faded he felt a slight chill run down his spine. “This place knows my fears . . . “, he thought to himself. As the rest of the team move on, Clone just continued to display the same uncharacteristically silent and nervous demeanor that he had since the interrogation of the Crimson Coven. As walked behind the rest of the group, the rest of the team could just barely hear him utter the words,” . . . there is something of much evil about this place . . . and it is to be coming for us . . . “

( OOC: After the team has re-united and entered the temple ) As the Dark Avatar starts to address him and his friends, Clone quietly and nonchalantly takes a few steps backward and starts to head to the back of a nearby pillar ( OOC: The pillar to his right, next to the stair case ). He knows whatever the Dark Avatar has to say is just more lies and deceptions, and pays little attention to its dialogue. As he reaches the nearby pillar he closes his eye for a brief second, does the ‘sign of the cross’, and takes out the crucifix that he keeps tugged safely inside of his shirt. He keeps his eyes closed as he starts to chant the Lords Prayer to himself softly. As he whispers his prayers, Clone silently asks God for forgiveness and strength in this moment of need. Everything he has experienced since he has come to this evil place has been a lie, a test of ones character, courage and convictions. He and his companions have been beset upon by the denizens of this God forsaken region of the universe since the moment they first appeared in it. Now, as they stand before the would-be master of this dark and twisted realm, they must now, more then ever, hold on to and embrace who and what they are. They must trust the purity that rests within their souls and allow it to give them the strength to overcome the darkness that stands against them. Clone has seen the true face of the beast and he is ready. He has made his peace with the lord and is prepared to do what he must . . . he fears no evil. As he starts to turn and emerge from behind the pillar he splits into two separate Clones.

Clone 1 – Comes out from behind the pillar and starts to walk towards the Dark Avatar with purpose in his eyes. He knows what he must do. He knows that this creature can not win and he is prepared to do what ever he has to. As he weaves his way through his comrades, he makes it obvious to all; even the Dark Avatar, that he is going to attack.

Clone 2 – Once he is certain that the group and Clone 1 have gotten the attention of the Dark Avatar, Clone 2 will make his way towards to stairs on the right side of the map. He starts to head down them as quickly and as cautiously as possible, and thinks to himself,” . . . there must be something down here that we can use!”

OOC: Great Issue Jeff! Sorry again for lagging behind with the responses these last couple of issues. Real Life has been a real bitch these last couple of months - hopefully things will slow down soon enough. I’m not sure if it helps, but Clone is definitely getting ready for another round of getting mind-f^@*$d by the evil critters that inhabit this plane of existence. If you need to ‘eat up’ one of my Luck Points just to have him make a saving throw or something – go for it. Clone 1 is going to do what he can to keep the Dark Avatar busy – his plan is the same one he always use – split up into as many duplicates that he and then ‘dog pile on the rabbit’, or in this case – the Dark Avatar. Clone 2 is hoping that he’ll find something that might be of some help to the group – maybe even the wizard behind the curtain ( Wizard of Oz reference ).

Talk to you all soon,

-Kev
--------------------------------------------------

Lightning Strike:
Strike surveyed this dark temple and looked at Dark Avatar. "Your Crimson Coven was no match for Vanguard. Your evil will always fail when confronted with righteousness. You tried to demoralize us with lies and false visions to no avail. We will bring this temple down and you with it." Strike will focus his attention on Dark Avatar and let the heavy hitters bring down the temple, assuming that is the source of her power. Strike will let loose two blasts of electricity at her to get a sense of her power.

That's all for now.

Take care,
Tony

Vanguard: Issue 127: Secret Origins!

Vanguard had awoken from a madhouse into a strange, otherworldly landscape where they were ambushed by the Crimson Coven, and defeated them! The team divided. Avatar, Clone, Menagerie and Symbiote stayed behind to interrogate Warlock and get some answers. “Where are we?!” demanded Avatar.

The Warlock spat, “You are so very far from the fields you know. You are all in grave danger. In your pathetic condition of ignorance, you and your henchmen have no chance to survive here.
Surrender! This plane of existence intersects with all dimensions in the multiverse! Can you even comprehend that?! You stand before the nexus of infinity, with the understanding of an ant!”

Menagerie said: “You’ve tapped into a mystical power source of some kind. Explain it.”

The Warlock grew quiet as he took the measure of the magical Menagerie. He looked around, observing the defeated Coven members. “Yes we have. One as old as the universes. You’ve no chance to defeat the Coven. Even now, my allies who remain free are readying a counterattack. Release me and I will spare your lives!”

Symbiote said, “You have another ally, don’t you?” “Yes,” smiled the Warlock darkly. “Woe unto you, my patron is a celestial denizen of this intersection of infinity and eternity.” He looked directly at Avatar with hateful defiance. “A cosmic being you cannot hope to withstand. The Dark Avatar of the Proto-Pantheon!”

A Clone chiseled feverishly at the motionless Golem’s forehead. (Clone’s Folklore skill tells him to hit the right-most letter because the word he wishes to alter is written in Hebrew, which is read from right to left!) KRACK! Clone destroyed the “first” letter of the word emet. Doing so changed its meaning from “truth” to “death,” or met, and the Golem suddenly crumbled to dust in a landslide of obliteration!

Another Clone stepped forward and looked directly at the Warlock. His gaze lingered for a moment on the menacing mystic before he asked him in Russian, “You . . . Warlock . . . what is your name?”
The Warlock was seething at the destruction of his creation. He stared directly into Clone’s eyes and replied in Russian, “Peasant, if you have any notion as to who I truly am then you, more than any of these sheep, know that you had best release me now or suffer consequences too horrible to consider!”

The Clone felt himself compelled to obey! The other Clones were somehow aware of this, and could not act to stop him! The Clone began to untie the Warlock!

Symbiote didn’t speak Russian but he knew something was happening that he didn’t like. He put his hand on the sinister sorcerer’s shoulder and shocked him back into unconsciousness! ZERAP!!!

The Clones snapped out of it! Their free will was restored.

"Well, that wasn't very helpful was it?" Hal said sardonically. "Guys, at this point I see nothing else to do but follow the others."

“Wait,” said Menagerie. “There is another path.” The mysterious mystic approached Avatar. “I believe this place can help trigger a return of your memories. I would like to help you.”

Avatar said distantly, “Thank you. I am willing to try.”

Menagerie extended his magical senses into Avatar as the demigod manifested the Cosmic Awareness of Athena! The two gasped in awe! (each spend one Luck Point)

Clone and Symbiote stood guard over the Warlock and the Crimson Coven, and saw Avatar and Menagerie reeling from the sensation of hurtling awareness!

Avatar remembered, and Menagerie saw, Avatar’s origin because it was linked to this plane of existence!

Alone of all men, he was given the power of the Pantheon! He was their cosmic champion, their immortal avatar! He may have even been Heracles, Bellerophon, Achilles, Theseus and Odysseus!

But unseen enemies destroyed the Pantheon and hunted the Avatar! Killing him would only trigger his reincarnation and rebirth. So instead they destroyed his memory! Leaving him lost and wandering the world of Men for centuries. And in such a condition of lost identity, the Avatar could not be detected or found!

So he lay hidden, and all but forgotten, through the ages. He fought as a soldier in the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, and more, being reincarnated whenever killed, but never regaining his true memory.

Finally, the lost champion died in a car accident and was reborn into the infant body of John Poulos, over 20 years ago. Struggling with his lost identity, the superhero renaissance of the 21st century inspired him to become the hero Kairos, not understanding his past, his purpose, or his destiny.

The sorceress supervillain Penumbra wondered if Kairos was the fabled lost Avatar and tested him while posing as a member of Homicide For Hire. Convinced of his true identity, she tried to fool the amnesiac Avatar into serving her, but the attempt failed by a stroke of luck!

Then John was finally recognized by the Oracle for who he was. The Oracle told John what little she knew of the Pantheon and the Avatar. This restored part of the cosmic champion’s memory and with it the power to manifest the Pantheon, and thus was he made visible again to those who searched for him.

Otom the Seer found him first and warned him that in his psychically wounded, incomplete state he could not survive what faced him. So, for the good of the Pantheon, he should bequeath the power to him. John resisted.

Now, the Crimson Coven have come, wanting the power of the Avatar, of the Pantheon, for their own nefarious purposes, and those of their patron, the Dark Avatar!

Menagerie and Avatar’s perception returned to their surroundings. They had learned much of Avatar, but little of the Dark Avatar.

Avatar was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, “Let’s catch up to the others.”

Clone became one body. Menagerie took the shape of Eagle. And with his mighty strength and speed, Avatar would bear his team mates as he hurtled into the mists to find their friends.

They soon discovered that the battle with the Crimson Coven had occurred in a ruin of some sort, littered with broken white marble architecture and statuary. The land beyond the ruin was a barren, dry wilderness. No landmarks, only pale mist beneath the red night sky.

Distances proved hard to judge in this silent land. They were perhaps a mile out from the unseen pentagram when, in the distance, rising above the moonlit mists, they saw a pale silhouette. It seemed to be the soaring towers of a mighty city! None of Vanguard recognized it. The architectural style was different than anything they’d seen before, even at the Lost Lands.

They moved closer, across the cracked ground of the barren wilderness.

Symbiote detected no electrical power within his range.

Moments earlier Lightning Strike, Soldier, Talon and Zephyr, who had scouted ahead searching for Sentinel and Slingshot, stood near this very place. They had crossed the weird wilderness and discovered the ruined city of unimaginably advanced technology! A quarter mile out was a small crater with footprints across it.

Soldier scanned the area with his cybernetic sensor array. His self diagnostic reported all systems functioning. "Guys, I don't know about the rest of you, but I've got a really uneasy feeling about this. It's just too damned quiet. I suggest we all remain on alert, and take it slow and easy from here."

Zephyr nodded and flew straight up into the sky to serve as lookout.
Talon examined the small, empty crater closely. “The crater is recent. I bet Slingshot made it when he landed. These are his footprints going into the city. If the second pair is Sentinel’s, why isn’t he flying?”
Strike said, "Hopefully this city will provide us with some answers and perhaps a way out of this place. It seems pretty clear that someone or something other than the coven brought us here and did so in a way that left us no memory of being transported here. We may be dealing with powers beyond even our comprehension."

The four heroes entered the ruin of the lost ancients.
It was Ragnarok and Armageddon and the Apocalypse and the Fall and The Death of the Gods and among this unimaginable scale and disaster wandered four tiny figures who tracked the footprints toward the heart of the cataclysm. (OOC: Our heroes make their Cool rolls)

They came into a large open area near the center of the World’s Ending, what might have once been a gathering place of the gods. There was a great temple before them whose architecture was a dizzying amalgam of the pantheons of the world. The temple was black and was not, unlike everything around it, in a state of ruin!

Before the heroes could act, the mist that covered the stone ground of the entire ruin, perhaps this entire world, undulated and writhed and within its vaporous tendrils, they could see images… visions.

In the mist, Lightning Strike saw the future! There, Silas Caine became the President of the United States of America! Then he began a culture war that divided the world into human and metahuman! Superheroes and supervillains found themselves on the same side! Vanguard was forced to defend itself against CHESS and the other armed forces! Thousands died in the war, including members of Vanguard! All because of one man, Silas Caine. And it all could have been averted if Strike hadn’t saved Caine’s life!

In the mist, Soldier saw his father! Uncertain about the resolve of his son, General Steele sent him on a phony mission whose only purpose was to test him! The Patriot was acting on the general’s behalf, to see if Soldier would join him! That’s why his lair was filled with CHESS issue weapons and gear! That’s why Ashe survived the plane wreck! That’s why the Patriot surrendered without a fight! The entire mission was a sham. After it, General Steele said, “Well done son. I knew you would follow orders and complete the mission.” Matt knew his father well enough to know when he was lying. And he was lying then. Because Soldier’s father wanted him to join forces with the Patriot in an unauthorized, illegal military action against America’s enemies!

In the mist, Talon saw the future! He saw himself lose control in battle and kill his friends and loved ones! When he finally regained control, members of Vanguard lay around him, cut into bloody ribbons by his hand. Talon was hunted like an animal by the survivors of Vanguard and CHESS until he was finally apprehended. He was locked down, restrained and imprisoned deep within CHESS Castle where he would spend the rest of his life behind bars!

Moments earlier, Slingshot and Sentinel stood in this very place and also encountered the Nightmare Mists!

After entering the ruin of the lost ancients at the crossroads of infinity and eternity, Slingshot and Sentinel came into a large open area near the center of the World’s Ending, what might once have been a gathering place of the dead gods. There was a great temple before them whose architecture was a dizzying amalgam of the pantheons of the world. The temple, and the entire square, radiated with the energy that Sentinel had tracked!

The temple was black and was not, unlike everything around it, in a state of ruin!

Before the heroes could act, the mist that covered the stone ground of the entire ruin, perhaps this entire world, undulated and writhed and within its vaporous tendrils, they could see images… visions. Visons of their worst nightmares come true!

Sentinel grabbed the arm of Slingshot, trying to ground them both in what passed for reality in the recent moments of their lives and said, “This is the same as the institution we woke up in moments ago! I just saw my worst nightmare and I’d guess you are confronting your current greatest fear too. Reject it!”

Kirk took a half step forward symbolically placing himself between Slingshot and whatever this … thing … was. Although he knew Slingshot was much more physically resilient, he supposed that this sort of mental onslaught was much more up his own alley. It was this sort of threat that caused him to pursue the mental disciplines, and there was no way he’d back down, especially with one of his closest friends and allies at his side.

Slingshot shook his head at the vision in the mist. Hearing his comrade's plea to reject this new fear mongering vision, it made sense. All this was nothing but another ruse to keep them from approaching further. Another trick.
Sentinel’s telepathic scan detected a mind within the black temple that suddenly shielded itself and disappeared from his extranormal perception!

Sentinel said: “We won’t fall prey to the lust for power you hold over the Coven, nor will we give in to the despair you attempt to reap upon us! While I don’t subscribe to the notions of an ultimate God authority, I do realize there are beings of greater power that would fancy themselves as such. We’ve met one. It didn’t go well for him. If you were a god, certainly your actions have shown yourself as a malevolent one. I’m saddened by the prospect of those who would follow you. Enough of these games! Show yourself and make your intentions known.”

No answer.

Sentinel steeled his determination and pushed ahead toward the futuristic and ancient temple.

Using the pain that the vision brought on to fuel his resolve, Slingshot moved on and followed Sentinel. They needed to see this to its end.

What light there was inside the black temple emanated from Sentinel’s faltering energy shields. Through the darkness they saw more of that hybrid archeology of the human race. There a great, long rectangular hall lined with towering statues of godlike figures! In the center was a black altar.

Their eyes and Sentinel’s metahuman senses detected no others present with them in this mighty hall.

The statues were familiar and strange; the same sensation of cultural fusion that possessed the dead city. These figures were gods, but not like those of Olympus or Valhalla. They were the others. Gods and goddesses of Death and Hell, of Misery and Tragedy.

This was the Pantheon of Evil.

And into their sacristy strode their Dark Avatar and she was terrible to behold. (see image)

(OOC: Cool rolls upon sight! Sentinel succeeds. Slingshot fails and suffers a -3 penalty to all d20 rolls in the immediate future)

From the opposite end of the long hall she stopped and faced them. Her voice was seductive and her proposition was straightforward:

“Serve me.”

To be continued!

Menagerie:
[OOC] Awesome! That is very cool story! Could we be at the home of the Patheon?

As we traveled was there any sign of the second party traveling the same path?

Can Menagerie in his eagle form see any movement within the city?

Can Menagerie detect any danger?

Can Menagerie detect any hidden symbols that would tell us what this city is?

Can Menagerie detect hidden to find tracks or other signs that the missing member of Vanguard has been this way?

Viva Vanguard
Tom

GM:

OOC Replies to Menagerie:

Thanks!
At the tremendous speeds you travelled, none of you could detect signs of any party traveling the same path.

Menagerie in his eagle form detects no movement within the city at this range, a quarter mile out. If he took to the air, it might improve his chances. Does he do so?

Menagerie detects no immediate danger, but this entire environment is disconcerting, of course.

From this range, Menagerie detects no hidden symbols that would tell what this city is.

Now that your party has stopped momentarily, Menagerie may attempt to detect hidden to find tracks or other signs that the missing members of Vanguard have been this way. Does he do so? In Eagle form? If yes, at what height does he fly? How far does he roam from the party? Thanks.

Best,
Jeff

--------------------------------------------------

Menagerie:
OOC: Yes Menagerie will take to the air.
He will fly upwards of 40 ft and start circling outward at 5 feet and growing to 5 ft increments where he will check/spot with the other Vanguard members before enlarging the circle again. He will stop at 50 yards circling pattern and then return to Vanguard.

Regards
Tom

IC:

SKRAAA! The man in the shape of an eagle soared into the scarlet sky!
From his sharp eyes saw movement within the city. Tiny figures on foot, near its center.
Spiraling outward, he spied a crater in the misty wilderness, not far from his group. Descending to get a better view, he found it covered with footprints, at least six sets walking around the area!
Only two sets approached the crater, from the direction of the battle with the Crimson Coven.
Two different sets left the crater in the direction of the mysterious metropolis.
One deep set was in the center of the small crater.

Tracking those footprints from the air proved hard due to the mist that seemingly covered this world. It would have to be done from the ground.

Sentinel:
OOC: Hi guys. I'm looking forward to the big read of everything going on... especially with 'c' appearing last issue.

IC inquiry/initial thoughts:

Hopefully we can get input back from some of our skills to help determine our next actions before the issue.

From Kirk's energy sense - anything else 'live' in the area as being a source of power or just the altar?

Kirk whispers to Slingshot, "Do you see any weaknesses in the structural integrity of this place where we can take it down? Or at least bring the roof down on the altar and destroy it?" hoping his engineering and architectural knowledge will give them an edge here.

Both Kirk and Slingshot can do damage to the inanimate structure as part of their 'movement' and still have a direct action (if I recall game rules correctly) so at this point, he wants to figure a way to take down 'the house' or if not possible, bring down a portion of it on whatever may be the source of power or gateway of power (which I'm figuring for now is the altar unless the energy sense indicates more).

I think we've got a better shot of doing more 'damage' for the better of the team that way than in a direct confrontation with the Dark Avatar given our current physical conditions and power level (at least for Kirk) - although likely we won't be avoiding the direct confrontation either.

Once we determine if or how much of that is possible then we can determine our 'action'.

At least that's my best plan for the moment.

Seth

GM:
Hi guys.

IC:
Sentinel quickly scanned the chamber with his energy sense. This temple was the source of the energy current that was connected to the site of the battle between Vanguard and the Crimson Coven. The black temple was saturated with this energy and so were the altar and the Dark Avatar herself. Kirk had never encountered this energy signature before today but it had reminded him of Avatar. Now he knew why.

Also, Sentinel could see the Dark Avatar drawing energy from this temple. It was her place of power!

Slingshot looked around and his heart sunk. This black structure and its unholy altar were built to withstand Armageddon. In fact, maybe they had.
The altar was a massive, rectangular solid of obsidian-like stone.
There were eleven stone pillars, each as big around as a mature redwood trunk. For the roof to come down, eight of those pillars would have to go first. There were two near Slingshot and Sentinel on their end of the hall. Two were near the Dark Avatar and the remaining four spaced evenly between the heroes and the multiverse’s mystical manifestation of malice!

OOC: Totally defenseless inert objects don’t require an action to attack. But they require 1/3 of a character’s full movement.

Best,
Jeff

--------------------------------------------------

Sentinel:
Kirk whispered to Scott, “Think happy thoughts. Let’s bring down the house!”
Kirk began to whistle an old tune that Slingshot immediately recognized and the words came to his mind … how could they not, “Over there! Over there!” and as he did so an old style phonograph playing a record appeared beside them. And he no longer needed to think the words as they filled the chamber in all their originally scratchy glory,

“Send the word. Send the word over there!” Kirk didn’t have to think hard to manifest a duplicate of Lancaster’s record player he’d heard so many times over the years. He attached some modifications to help the song fill the dark barren chamber as it echoed a song of hope.

(“Serve me.”)

Kirk replied to the Dark Avatar with the sort of hope and determination that only he could pull from his inner self given the place they found themselves and the being before them, “Only when you first let go of the pain and hatred and the selfishness that has festered within you and allow yourself to once again see and serve the greater good.”
Kirk’s thoughts continued to focus on the song and what it inspired. During the earth’s darkest hour, when there was no question about the darkness, the evil that was enslaving the world, and when it seemed that nothing could stop the spread of that force, America choose to shine as a beacon.

“Send the word, send the word to beware.”
Men and women and children united as one looking beyond self, beyond all the qualities the Dark Avatar embodied, and let their light shine upon the world.

“We’ll be over, we’re coming over.”
They reinvigorated a despair-ridden Europe bringing hope once again to those who had lost reason to have it … and ultimately to the world.

“And we won’t come back till it’s over.”
They were everywhere! Kirk’s energy strewn throughout the temple filling it with images. They were surrounding Sentinel and Slingshot and the Dark Avatar. Members of the armored divisions and the infantry. They fired their weapons at the temple columns. The airborne filled the sky of the temple wreaking havoc on its structural supports. The navy erupted from the center of the altar … Multitudes of Rosie the Riveter’s riveted … Young children hurled stacks of tied newspapers and old comic books they’d collected in paper drives …
“Over there.”

OOC: Hope this isn’t too ‘over the top’ but I figured Kirk would try to take out the temple supports and am still working under the assumption that all isn’t as it seems. With the city in ruins, how could this structure be so sound? So hopefully the attack on what the temple stands for will allow this to be more successful, and that was where the whole scene morphed from in my head – if it is more along the lines of exactly what it physically seems, then even though Kirk might not be able to take it down at current power levels, Slingshot should be more than up to the task.
Best,
Seth

--------------------------------------------------

Slingshot:
Scott looked around. This place was made to withstand Armageddon. He knew construction. He knew how to build things and how to tear them down, but there's had to be a better way. Too bad he didn't know squat about religion.

If Sentinel thought that this place needed a clean up, then he knows more about this mumbo jumbo than Scott did. So it will have to do down.

He looks at the Pillars. This will take time to destroy. Let's see how fast it can be done.

[OOC: I'm the malleable man of might! This should be doable for me. Can I do a Mr Fantastic and wrap myself around two (or more) pillars and take the two/three of them in one movement phase? I'll try as many as I can.]

Question- I know that my character knows squat about Religion. is there any easy way to desecrate an altar? Peeing on it or something? This might be worth a luck point, but for next turn, lets see how the pillar situation pans out first.

--------------------------------------------------

Menagerie:
Menagerie returns to his team and informs the of what he has found. "I saw movement in the center and found tracks in a nearby crater. The crater looks like the landing spot of Slingshot. I suggest we travel to the crater and track our friends from there."

Unless there are objections he will lead the team to the location in human form. If he can't find the crater or tracks in human form. He will explain to the team he has lost the trail. He will inform them he will use his wolf form to find it again. "Please follow me, in whatever form I take".

His plan is to lead the team to the rest of Vanguard. He will not lead the team into a confrontation or to individuals that his senses don't recognize.

Thanks
Tom

--------------------------------------------------

Symbiote:
This sounds like as good a plan as any. Not much else to do. Let's find them.

--------------------------------------------------

Clone:
IC RESPONSE:
Clone is quiet throughout the trip, for the first time since he's been with the team the 'human collective' seems to be keeping his thoughts to himself. When its suggested that they continue their search for their missing comrades, Clone simply nods his head in agreement and follows the others.Something seems to be bothering him and he doesn't do a good job of hiding it from the others.

OOC RESPONSE:
Clone is constantly moving his head from side to side trying to keep a lookout for anything strange or unusual. Based on what the team has encountered since they've arrived in this strange land ( i.e. the strange and almost mythical members of the Crimson Coven ), he's convinced that the worst is yet to come . . . and that scares him. He'll use his Folklore skill and Detect Hidden/Danger to try and piece together anything he can about his surroundings. He's halfheartedly expecting to see a small shack mounted on top of a couple of bird legs running across the landscape ;)
Talk to you all soon,
-Kev

Avatar:
IC: Avatar stood, facing the city. His mind was racing, even with the God's augmenting wisdom. He had learned so much about himself, and much of it he didn't like. Am I nothing but a tool of an ancient pantheon? He asked himself. Is it my fate to just be reborn again and again, to die a violent death while doing their bidding? Is there nothing else for me?

One thing was certain: The answers--whether he would ultimately like them or not--would most likely lie within the mysterious metropolis before him. "I agree. Forward is the way to go," he said, and began walking towards the city.

--------------------------------------------------

Lightning Strike:
Strike shakes off the vision of the future. Having been fooled once before by a bleak vision, he wasn't going to fall for it again. He speaks to the small band of heroes. "These visions are no more real than what we experienced earlier. Something or someone is attempting to convince us that our futures are filled with despair. We can change our futures and are not subject to the whims of fate. I suggest we continue to the temple to try and find some answers. "

Lightning Strike continues to be on guard. Although the Crimson Coven seems defeated, he knows these villains continue to pop up when you least expect it.

Take it easy everyone,
Tony
