Issue 26: The Freedom Force Reborn!?

OOC: Hi all. This is a downtime/ bookkeeping turn. Please answer the following 4 things:

1) If you wish to leave the game for whatever reason, now is the perfect time in terms of our story. But I sincerely hope that none of you will leave. Those that stay, please continue:

2) Onboard the CHESS Omni-Carrier, Director Grey, on behalf of the US government, asks you heroes to form a new Freedom Force! You’ll stand to gain: a base of operations, vehicles, pay, equipment, security clearance, access to government files, support staff, health care, some police powers, and the chance to serve your country. (OOC: Replies, responses, discussion? The direction of this game is for you guys to decide. Government sponsorship has its pros and cons. It also gives you the power, Patron, and the weakness, Duty to Patron. How do you want this game to proceed? And, if yes, do you want your team to be named the Freedom Force or something else? Thanks. )

3) Please let me know what your character will be doing for the next week or so. Again, you control the game’s direction and your characters’ lives sow the seeds for future adventures. If you have many actions, please prioritize. Thanks!

4) Experience Point Time!
Anyone in the Empire State Building Doomsday Robot Encounter gets 1000 experience points!
Anyone in the SKULL Star Giant/Tsunami Machine/ Return of the Ubermensch Epic gets 1000 points!
Anyone in on Stopping Grey/Swastika and the Nuclear Missiles gets 1000 points & 1 Charisma point!

(Experience points are determined by the power of the defeated foe. Capturing your foe gives the most experience points possible. Killing your foe gives ½ points, unless unavoidable. If foe escapes you get ¼ of total points possible. Experience points are also awarded for achieving critical goals.)
So, Experience points now total:
· Blue Comet: 2000
· Forester: 2000
· Lightning Strike: 3000
· Sentinel: 3000
· Slingshot: 2000
· Viper: 3000

Each of you has gone up one level, to 2nd level! In V&V, every level increase means:
Better combat ability. (An attacker’s chance to hit is modified by the difference between his level and his target’s levels. Example: a 1st level hero attacking a 6th level villain gets a -5 modifier to hit. That same villain gets +5 to hit the 1st level hero. )
+1% to detect hidden and detect danger
New powers and/or skills! Please read the info on Character Advancement to figure out what you want to do on this, and then let me know! Have fun with this.

OK. You’ve got over two weeks for all this stuff. Then I’ll craft your new and improved character sheets. After you approve them, we’ll begin the next adventure in our senses-shattering saga-rama!

------------------------------------

Viper:
Agent Grey: Viper takes Grey up on the drink offer. "I hope you're not mad at me for getting you shot. I mean, I was guessing you wouldn't really get hurt, especially after you took one of my best shots!"
Viper empties his mug and continues. "Well I've never been one for thinking my way out of a problem. Let's just say it never suited me. I've always settled up the score with my fists and the ones I couldn't, I zigged and zagged till they stopped chasing me!"

Viper grins after his little joke and then quickly gets serious.
"Those missiles.. They got me to thinking. That was a lot of people in danger. I mean, this is no flea bag circus you have here, this is the Big Top, the Center ring." Looking up from his empty mug. "Grey. I need to get up to speed. I need to know the difference between the Ratman and an Uber-wench. Now I'm not saying I want to take over the joint, but I can't just be here for my good looks. I s'pose I need some tutoring. Now that Venus girl, she'd be a good teacher, I'm sure. Maybe she could help me get a better understanding of what's happening here. What do you say?"

((Viper is looking for 2 things really. He wants to understand how Chess, extra-normals good and bad, this team and the government all fit in. He's having a hard time trusting any of the people here, except for his team members. The second thing he wants is more time with Venus. Hey! An extra-normal has got to have a social life. Venus could let him know about the other extra-normals, Chess, etc.))

Venus (With or without Grey's help): At their next meeting, Viper runs up and gets in front of Venus, oblivious to the fact she might have other pressing matters. "Hey, Venus! I was worried about you when we lost contact." Viper gives his best casual, come have a drink with me, smile. "I heard they knocked you out." Viper frowns. "I'll have a word with Grey about that. He should have taken better care to protect you."
Viper does a poor job of impressing Venus. "So. so I was wondering if you weren't busy, we could get together for a drink and shoot the breeze some. I'd like to know more about what happened on the ship while we were skinny dipping. Maybe you could tell me about some of these characters we picked up in Swazi's lab of a 1000 Horrors."

Sentinel and the Bearded Lady: Viper slaps his knee at the sight of the Kentucky bourbon. He holds it up in the air and toasts, "Here's ta bein' yaself!" He grins and downs the glass.
"That Bearded lady, ehh. Well here's the story. You know how a pretty girl can bring you to the pond but get mad when you try and drink from it? Well that's what's special about my Bearded lady."
Viper winks. "She may not be much ta look at, but she sure wants to let you drink from that pond. Sometimes you avoid the people who want to be your friends, just to chase something you'll never get. Well she always had time for ole Viper, that's for sure."

Viper fills the glasses again. "You know the circus is like a family. You accept people for who they are, not what they look like or what they did. You never ask questions of them and you certainly don't judge 'em. I'm not sure CHESS is that kind of family, no matter how circus like the past few days have been."
Viper downs the second glass. "Sentinel, what we're doin' seems big. Big enuff where a lot of people will be saved or get hurt by the choices we make. So.."
Pours another glass. "Do me a favor." Downs the glass and slams it to the table. "Let me know if I screw up without makin' me look like a dumb red-neck."

Actions: Viper wants to look into how and when people were taken over by Swastika and if there is some code the team can come up with to help them discern whether one of them is possessed by Swastika. Maybe with Venus' help they could do something to shield themselves or set up some sort of mundane code that Swastika would not readily look for. Example "the chicken is on the roof.. (reply) with the red galoshes"

Viper will spend any free time he has socializing with the crew and others on board. He really wants to ask some prying questions about the character of CHESS. Even though Venus scanned the ship and other CHESS agents, Viper feels there's nothing like some good old fashion 'get 'em drunk and see what they know' investigating.

------------------------------------

Slingshot:

(OOC: Great stuff. I was hoping that I didn't miss an opportunity to speak to the other members of the group last ish. Obviously, more is available.
So why don't we try to have a little sidebar over the sponsoring? I'll set the stage? Don't hesitate to rewrite anything that I wrote.)

The entire team was approached by Grey to reform Freedom Force. Now we are looking at each other in a meeting room on board of the Omni-Carrier. Being the last to enter the room, Slingshot closed the door behind him and sat down on a chair.

He looked at the group gathered around the table. Sentinel who, as always, had the bearing of a superhero. Viper who smirks as if he was about to makes a snarky comment. He probably was.. to Venus. Forester, sitting in what seems to be the comfort of his cloak, obviously pondering the question at hand. Lightning Strike was unreadable at the moment. Blue Comet seems a bit inpatient, not entirely surprising since he lives his life at many times the regular speed.
Scott cleared his throat. "So what do you think of CHESS and Grey's proposal?”
(later…)
As he listened to his fellows Supers, Scott couldn't help looking around at the opulence of the CHESS operations demonstrated in this meeting room alone. It certainly was a tempting offer.

He spoke slowly, "I must say that I'm very interested. What we saw with the missile attack is that this outfit has good people who think on their feet and don't follow orders blindly. That speaks volume for the organization, in my eyes. On the other hand, I hope they are not to heavy handed with the restrictions. I'm not going to be a good man in black."
He looks around the table and says, "I know that I'm relatively new to the gang, but here's my vote: I'm willing to try on the CHESS gig and see where that leads us."

OOC: Slingshot will do some melee and hand-to-hand combat training and gain +2 to hit.

------------------------------------

Sentinel:
OOC: To Jeff, the GM deity, and all the rest of the gang, the players supreme, -
Thanks for a GREAT first adventure ... it's been a BLAST!

What has been the history of heroes -- government relationships?
I believe you told us (and Tony and Chris experienced) that the original Freedom Force had a government liaison in Grey, but how official was their relationship with the government? Were they government sponsored? Did they answer directly to them? Were they given orders? Were they a division of Chess or a sister-organization or was the Freedom Force more independent? If independent, where did they get their financing, etc?

From the Liberty League - although we haven't discussed it, given that they were something the world hadn't experienced before, it would seem that the heroes came together and began to work together as a loose band of heroes, but as the war effort advanced they coordinated themselves closer. It would seem likely that with the war the government took an interest in them, but did not "sponsor" them. Likely Agent America - Myles Hudson - would have eventually played the role as government liaison for the team, which would directly make sense and lead into Swastika "choosing" him to possess and work his fiendish plot to eliminate the heroes from the world scene by political means. It would seem that the government would have given them some recognition, and perhaps some "deputy" status, but would not officially control them ... this too would have given the League better opportunity to "deal" with some situations without the US Govt taking "official" responsibility for their action, even then the govt likely would have wanted the ability to have "reasonable deniability" for some of their actions.

Does this sound reasonable for the Liberty League/government interaction from the late 30's until Swastika made his move (late 40's early 50's I assume) via the possessed Hudson?

I've already got an idea of Kirk's concerns, but his knowledge of past government/hero interaction will certainly influence both his decision here and his concerns.

Thanks.
Seth

OOC GM Replies:
The public was never privy to the exact inner workings of the relationship between the FF and the government, but they did know:
· The FF were “government sponsored” for years.
· This means they were employees of the government, and received assignments from them.
· It also means that the government picked up their tab: base, salaries, equipment, vehicles, etc.
· The FF were under CHESS’s jurisdiction (see OOC GM Replies to Issue 25 for more CHESS info) but had plenty of leeway in terms of how to handle assignments, FF membership, etc.
· The FF eventually elected to end the relationship and resigned their sponsorship/employment.
· After resigning, the scope of FF operations was severely curtailed, perhaps due to lack of resources. This reduction of activity brought about the end of the second Age of Heroes.

GM Reply: Yes. That’s an accurate portrayal.

Sentinel:
Kirk was closing in on the apartment. As soon as things had reasonably quieted down he knew he needed to speak with Gramps. After all, the past few days was something they had both spent many years in preparation for and he wanted him to share in this moment too. But it wasn’t just that … he had to tell him about how his worldview had also changed these passed few days. It was beyond the time when Lancaster would tell him what to do; in fact, even when it was “that time” that simply wasn’t his way. Perhaps that was why he needed him as a sounding board at this time; he wanted to be told that he was on the right track, to confirm what he was already contemplating or that he was an idiot.
Lancaster knew he was on his way, and could likely sense Kirk as he flew closer. Yes, Lancaster would have sensed Kirk’s presence before Kirk did his. As Kirk landed on the Penthouse roof he walked inside and Lancaster was in his chair with the fireplace on one side and his view of the city on the other. On the bar the drinks were already poured. Kirk brought them over.

“Tell me everything,” Lancaster said with a smile.

And Kirk began to relate all that had occurred. “It was everything you said it would be like and more!” And Kirk told it all in great detail… about the amazing men and women he met and worked with … and about Lancaster’s friends. The legends in men who seemed even larger in life now that he’d met them.

But he also spoke about his concerns … about poor Myles Hudson. Lancaster had never blamed him. He always said there must have been a good reason behind his actions … that he must have thought he was doing the right thing. It was Kirk who had harbored the bad feelings and how wrong he had been for it.
“But Gramps, all these years Swastika was manipulating events, holding all those people prisoner both body and mind… the Leaguers said this was beyond anything Swastika had done in the past. But I feel so terrible, so bad that I thought those bad thoughts about Myles all these years. And I feel worse that the League had grown far enough apart so that no one realized what had really happened to him. I want to try to do all I can to be sure nothing like that happens to anyone or anyone of us, again.

“You seemed to know Grey and trust him. And I know all about his public history, and a few things in the computers not so public that indicate he is a good man. And from seeing him in action, I think it all the moreso. He mentioned a new Freedom Force. I think I need to be a part of that. After seeing what happened these past few days, I need to be in a position where I can do the most good. And I’d like to see this new Freedom Force take a more active role in making sure that nothing like Swastika happens again.

“Chess had become corrupted by Swastika and even by a government that promoted extranormal paranoia and men overcome by that prejudice. We need to help the world to see that despite our powers we’re no different from everyone else. We can all be heroes if we do what is right.

“Grey needs some good men he can count on … men to watch his back as he looks out for the good of everyone. I’d like to be one of those men… to serve the greater good… and to convince those that are fearful of us that we deserve to be looked at as individuals just like them.

“But I am concerned about being part of the government. On the one hand, I wouldn’t have to worry about a day job. So my time could be spent doing the greater good much easier. But then I worry about people thinking I was using my gifts selfishly …. being on “payroll.” What do you think? Do you think they might try to use us in an unscrupulous way? I'm not going to be a government lackey either...
The League didn’t work that way, but the original Freedom Force did and they were considered heroes. And when they broke off the government support, their activities seemed to dwindle...”

In mid-thought, Kirk laughed out loud, and said “Well, the only thing that seemed to entice Stone to stick around was the paycheck. Ha!”

(Please have Lancaster add to or give his thoughts on all of the above, the adventure, Swastika and Hudson, and his thoughts about Grey and government sponsorship and what that entails and Kirk’s thoughts about this stuff – anything on his mind. After this assuming Kirk doesn’t have follow-ups to Lancaster’s thoughts next would be…)

“There’s also something else I need to talk to you about. It’s about me and my own self-improvement and where you think I should put my energies.
We both know that over time you became more adept at manipulating the energy and with the creations … that you can do more than I can both in power, range, distance and we figured that in time as I trained I would get better too. We’ve seen it happen already to some degree.

“But in speaking with one of my new “friends” he asked me about my powers and their source and I explained that I was unsure of it myself. And I told you about my experience with the Star Giant and how I felt just beyond the edge of my “energy” sense were the feelings that I had some empathic sense with the Star Giant, not enough to outright communicate, but enough to know that something was there, just beyond my grasp. Like I knew it was there, but couldn’t see it. Almost like when I first began to be able to sense and manipulate “our” energy.

“Beyond our ability to sense energy in general, we seem only able to manipulate “our” energy. I’ve never really questioned it, but we don’t know if we generate it ourselves, or “draw” it from elsewhere like a tap. Now with the computers, I seem very adept with them although that’s not one of your talents. I’m beginning to think it’s because I’ve grown up with them and took to them without thinking about it. I know my energy talent has helped me to understand them… after all, in their most basic form they are just little bits of energy … little bits of energy that are either on or off are the building blocks of all the computer systems.
But what if it isn’t just the computers. What if when we begin to break everything down to their basic components. Wouldn’t it just be different types of energy. And what if we worked with our energy sense to possibly extend it to other forms of energy… mental energy and forces like I almost experienced with the Star Giant. Even physical atoms break down to energy components of protons and neutrons and electrons.

“Gramps, I know that you don’t like to think about stuff like this … you come from a more practical age… and that’s why you went with the energy creations. When it came to science you had Doc Rocket. When it came to magic you called in “The Mystic”, hell, you said you guys used to hate even being in the same room with him. What I’m saying is what if because you never needed to use our energy control in another way you didn’t really try… what if our energy creations are just the beginning of what we can accomplish if we push open a few doors within ourselves?

“I spoke to Venus, a telepath Grey brought in, about my experience with the Star Giant and she wasn’t in a position to help me to learn more about my potential with “mind” energy, but I can’t help thinking with Swastika still out there and with Venus having no interest in staying on … is it my responsibility to try to pursue this further to protect everyone that way? Or if I’m right would everyone be better served if I tried to pursue working with computer technology more? Or should I be more concerned about trying to figure out our energy itself … learn to tap or generate more of it or manipulate it more efficiently?
I just don’t know what would serve the greater good most now… what do you think?
Have you tried using our powers in ways beyond the energy creations that you haven’t told me about?

(Ok, let’s see what Lancaster thinks about “this sort of nonsense”… probably have you had a few drinks before coming to see me???)

Sentinel to Viper: Viper said: "Do me a favor." Downs the glass and slams it to the table. "Let me know if I screw up without makin' me look like a dumb red-neck."
"Viper, from what I've seen of you, your a good man at heart ... a great man ... follow your heart and the good sentiments of the circus you spoke about, and you won't screw up We've got each other's back."
Sentinel picks up his glass to his eye level and looks at it. "But I agree that we've got big decisions to make that will affect many people ... here's hoping we all make good ones!"
And he downed the drink.

------------------------------------

Forester:

OOC: Here's how Forester would like to advance in Level 2 (in addition to the Charisma bonus you outlined in Issue 26)
Impact Arrow: For stylistic reasons alone, he will rename this The Silver Arrow. It works the same as before, but sports a coat of metallic paint to change to color. If the team encounters a band of hungry were-coyotes, the silver-color coating will have no special bonus.

Scented Arrow: This new arrow releases a pungent, musk-scented arrow upon impact. The non-toxic oil may lure hungry predators (like those Uber-sharks), confuse other trackers, mark a 5-foot by 5-foot area, or tag an individual (especially invisible opponents, or sinister shape-shifters).

If more upgrades are available, let me know. Thanks.
Here's the response to portion 2, on chess. Thanks for the good set up, Stephane.

IC: "I've worked with my share of directors," the actor-archer said to Grey. "And an opportunity to work closely with CHESS would be hard to pass up. But before deciding whether to move Pawn to Bishop 3 or Castle, King-side, I'd like to spend time to think things through."

After the other heroes have spoken, Forester requests a one week leave of absence before announcing his decision.
(later…)
No matter what transpires regarding the heroes and CHESS, Fred Knoble (aka Forester) spends a week on a self-styled meditation retreat, hiking through the Pacific Northwest and practicing some of his outdoor skills. He leaves his costume and arrows at home. Toward the end of the week, Fred calmly stops by the Haven compound. During the short visit, he will ask to speak with Marksman.

If Marksman is available, Forester will keep the conversation kind but concise. He will ask Marksman directly, "Have things been safe here over the past few weeks? Any unusual disturbances or disappearances? Any signs of trouble that you'd like help with?"

Fred will not mention CHESS, Freedom Force, SKULL, or the Over-men. The most he'll reveal is that, "The training I received here, and the arrows you gave me, have been invaluable. I can't thank you enough for everything I learned."

OOC:
The Luck Point comes just in the nick of time. Forester (aka Fred Knobel) is set to use one during his visit to Haven. Here goes:
During his original training at Haven, Fred Knobel heard Marksman speak to the advanced students about the Enemy. While the Four Noble Truths teach that the ultimate danger lies in our own dissatisfaction, and the distracting thoughts within our own minds, it didn’t take a Zen Master to figure out that Marksman had something more specific than the concept of dukka on his mind.

But who was this so-called Enemy? SKULL? CHESS? Some ancient force? A foretold foe? Fred didn’t know, and despite his inquisitiveness he never asked. He would know when he was ready to know. Besides, Marksman wouldn’t have told him anyway.

On his return visit to Haven, Fred will pay close attention to what is said and what is unsaid. He will read from The Dhammapada, returning often to his favorite verse: “Elusive and unreliable as it is, the wise man straightens out his restless, agitated mind, like a fletcher crafting an arrow.”

He will meditate, and mediate more. And he will use a LUCK POINT, if need be, to discern what he can about the Enemy. Because the Path to Enlightenment is often sketchy on details, Fred will do some follow up research on any leads to gain more information about the Enemy.

NPC Replies:
Viper and Sentinel:
(OOC: These are the NPC replies so far. Week-long actions, like Forester’s sojourn to Haven or Viper plying the Omni-carrier crew with drink, will be answered later. Thanks.)

Viper said: “Grey. I need to get up to speed. I need to know the difference between the Ratman and an Uber-wench…”

Grey smiled. “Glad to hear it. I was hoping you’d come to that conclusion. The best way to get up to speed is to take the government up on their offer (see Issue 26). We can wise you up quick.”
But when Viper started in on Venus his new tutor, Grey’s smile shriveled up. His head shook ‘no’ and he said, “Do me a favor and forget it. You’ve given her plenty of grief already, I hear. I’m trying to keep her around and I think you’ll botch it for me.”

Viper said: (With or without Grey's help): At their next meeting, Viper runs up and gets in front of Venus, oblivious to the fact she might have other pressing matters. "Hey, Venus!...”
Viper found Venus and Forester talking together and barged right in. Viper made his play, "So. So I was wondering if you weren't busy, we could get together for a drink and shoot the breeze some…”

“After all the taunting you’ve given me?!” SLAP!!! Venus’s right hand caught Viper’s face. It stung hard. Venus said coldly: “Viper, it doesn’t take a mind reader to know what you’re thinking.”
(OOC: Reactions Forester and Viper?)

NPC Replies:
Sentinel and Lancaster: Whenever Kirk met with his grandfather, he was always amazed that he could ever forget the man’s presence. Despite his age, Lancaster Gerard was as full of strength, perception and vitality as ever (imagine Sean Connery, Doc Savage, and Max Von Sydow).

Lancaster was shocked and saddened to hear of the return of Dr. Swastika and especially what had befallen his former teammate, Miles Hudson, at the hands of the mad Nazi genius.
At news of the reunion of the Liberty League, old, good memories crossed his mind, momentarily lightening his expression.

“You’ve done exceptionally well, son,” he said raising his glass, “Just as I knew you would.”

Then he gave counsel to his only grandson. “With Grey in charge of CHESS, I think you’ll only see improvements in the demeanor of the United States towards us heroes.” The word ‘extranormal’ wasn’t in Lancaster’s vocabulary.

“The funding and freedoms, that only the government can provide, will enable you to do the greatest good for the most people. That alone should outweigh any personal feelings you have for being employed by another. Don’t you agree?” he asked mildly.

“We have been blessed with great power, Kirk. It is our responsibility to make the most of our blessings. And as powerful as I was, I never achieved more than with a team at my side.”

Sentinel said:

Lancaster listened quietly, his hands forming a steeple, as Sentinel went on with the exuberance and passion that was the hallmark of youth.
When Kirk was finally done, Lancaster smiled gently, “Son, I’m proud of you. I think you’re ready for the next step.”

When Lancaster said those words, his mouth didn’t move.

After Venus slaps Viper, Forester calmly exits the room. He says nothing.

NPC Replies:
Forester:
Forester made the journey to Haven. At dawn his rusty, rented Jeep had gone as far as it could. He left it and began the day-long hike through the forest wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. The smell of the summer air. The towering redwoods. The sound of water in the brook. The pace of life slowed down with every hour, with every step, and cautious deer never heard Forester pass by.

Near sundown Frederick found the damage. A forest fire must have eaten the woods alive. A naked, scarred hilltop crowned by black tree skeletons and stumps was all that was left of Haven. It was an open wound on The Land.

The sky grew dark and the stars appeared in infinite number. “Student,” came a voice from the past. Forester turned and saw his old master, the Marksman. Somehow he had come within ten feet of Forester without his knowing it.

The man sat lotus style upon a broad, flat rock. Shooting stars in the night sky formed a halo around his head. He was not in costume, his blind eyes were uncovered, and his hands were empty (Imagine Clive Owen meets David Carradine).
He was completely calm when he said, “What brings you here now, student? And remember, I can hear your heartbeat.”
(OOC: Reply?)

------------------------------------

Forester:

The man called Forester is devastated to see the damage left by the fire, and the destruction of Haven. As a result, his conversation with Marksman flows differently from the version he had rehearsed in his head.

"It is good to see you again, Marksman," the younger archer says while kneeling down. "It's no secret that many extra-normals have turned up missing in recent weeks and months, including some former members of Freedom Force. So I came here out of concern for your well-being."

"The way you alluded to the Enemy from time to time gave me an extra incentive to see if you and Haven were safe. Maybe THIS is what you meant," he says, looking around. "I'm not sure. I only wish I had come sooner."

"I can't begin to explain how much I benefited from my training at Haven. If there is any way I might assist, please let me know," he adds. "I'm sure you would have contacted the authorities by now if you felt it was necessary. I would not take it upon myself to act that way on your behalf--unless of course you asked."

Forester learned long ago the futility in playing 20 questions with a Zen Master. So instead of prying out information, he listens carefully to anything that Marksman has to say.

OOC: Jeff, Forester will follow Marksman's lead at this point. Feel free to move ahead with actions and decision-making as need be. If Marksman asks about Freedom Force or CHESS, Forester will say, " I recently was contacted by Brian Grey, the new the director of CHESS. But I am still considered whether or not to become an agent, and I am not here on CHESS business. You're the only one who knows that I am here."

------------------------------------

Sentinel:
“The funding and freedoms, that only the government can provide, will enable you to do the greatest good for the most people. That alone should outweigh any personal feelings you have for being employed by another. Don’t you agree?” he asked mildly.

Kirk nodded in reply. This was the conclusion he had already come to in his own mind, but hearing it conveyed by Gramps confirmed he was thinking the right away. And it would free up his time to pursue the important things without being distracted by worrying about daily needs.

When Kirk was finally done, Lancaster smiled gently, “Son, I’m proud of you. I think you’re ready for the next step.”
When Lancaster said those words, his mouth didn’t move.

At first a small _expression of surprise crossed the face of young Kirk, which fast turned into a smile and a small laugh as Kirk said, “Just when I think I’ve finally got you figured out, “Old Man”, you manage to surprise me, and be a step ahead.”

Kirk’s “old man” _expression was a term of endearment between the two of them when Kirk was trying to be serious with him and didn’t want him thinking of him as a young boy anymore. He didn’t feel it proper to call him “Lancaster” in personal conversation, not respectful enough, but sometimes Gramps didn’t seem right for the moment either… a conflict as Kirk became of age. Still, if someone else used the _expression with Lancaster, Kirk would be the first one to shut them down. Somehow, with their special relationship, it reflected the tone and inflection of both love and respect that Kirk intended.

“Teach me,” Kirk said with the voice a young man coming into his own, followed by a change in tone and enthusiasm that invoked a sense of déjà vu from a time a decade earlier in Lancaster when he added, “Teach me everything!”

OOC Nice to know that the GM deity can still keep surprising me. :)

Viper found Venus and Forester talking together and barged right in. Viper made his play, "So. So I was wondering if you weren't busy, we could get together for a drink and shoot the breeze some."

"After all the taunting you've given me?!" SLAP!!! Venus's right hand caught Viper's face. It stung hard. Venus said coldly: "Viper, it doesn't take a mind reader to know what you're thinking."

Viper stared after Venus while rubbing his jaw. He was sure he saw Forester in the room too but was so intent on Venus that he never saw him leave.

"Hot damn." Viper whispered. "She sure isn't like the bearded lady." Sighing, Viper walked off, looking for a more social place that served something to numb his jaw.

((OOC: I'm assuming even CHESS has a Rec area where they wet their whistle after a hard days saving the world. I'm not sure the carrier would have a wise old bartender that Viper could befriend. If not, he'd settle for a chance meeting of a patron (luck point) to be his contact.))

Viper arrives at the bar/rec area/social spot on the Carrier. He mingles with the resting CHESS people entertaining them with stories of Midgets being shot out of cannons and lion tamers losing their ears. He laughs loudly at his own stories, has a drink at every story break and finally feels a bit light headed. After losing most of his audience, Viper settles down and thinks back on his Venus
encounter.
Mumbling a bit and rubbing his jaw again. "Slapped again. Oh Jake, there you go again, swinging from the trapeze without a net. I don't get the girl in this one, I s'pose."

Meeting about joining CHESS:

"I Think CHESS needs you fellas to look after them. I mean really, without you fly boys catchin' up ta those missiles they'd be doin' the biggest circus clean-up ever. Lucky we were here, I'd say.
(Viper leans forward) They have nice equipment and all, but I'm a little concerned that their leader's brain can be taken over to send missiles ta destroy our homes. "

"I guess what I'm sayin' is, Who will watch them if we're not around?"

Viper, in an unusual moment of deep thinking, sits back in his chair feeling good about his part in the discussion. Then suddenly adds... "Oh! They have some great 'eats' here too!"

((OOC: Jeff, I think I'll save my training points and use a Luck Point to find a contact within CHESS. In any other downtime, Viper (Jake) will check out CHESS's operation. He's especially interested
in their gadgets and their equipment. As a former circus performer, he realize the importance of having a working 'net' and well oiled equipment.))

Slingshot:
Slingshot will try and keep track of Nanite, as he feels bad about not helping her out in her time of need. He'll talk to Venus to see if she got anything from her about where she was headed. If Venus is no lead, he'll go so far as to use up a luck point to get somewhere.

Viper and Happy Hour:
To judge from the people he rubbed elbows with in the rec hall, Viper finds CHESS to be filled with well-intentioned men and women. There were some hero haters like Sam Drake in their midst, but by and large, they wanted to serve America and protect her.

Viper made a new friend at the rec hall bar, or actually behind it: Molloy, a big old Irish bruiser out of Hell’s Kitchen. Ex-Navy. Ex-CHESS Knight. Now works mess hall on the Omni-Carrier, including tending bar. Molloy’s ruddy right cheek had a scar from where a knife had kissed it. On his bicep was a tattoo of a hula girl that danced when he lifted crates of booze. His hands were thick, blocky and had only nine fingers left (imagine Robert Shaw meets Michael Caine meets Kirk Douglas).
Molloy appreciated the circus stories and swapped some about life in the navy as well as on “this big boat.”

NPC Replies:
Forester and Marksman:
As stars rained down across the infinite black void, the Zen Master peacefully extended an open hand to indicate the smoking black remains of Haven that was their surroundings.
“The War has begun,” he observed quietly.
“Which side will you find yourself on?
“You are in a precarious position, student, having broken your training at such a critical juncture. Disciplined yet impetuous. Focused yet distracted. Loyal yet individualistic. Calm yet passionate. Peaceful yet restless. Wise yet foolish. Strong yet weak.
The Enemy will seek you out. They will attempt to recruit you… if they have not already done so.”

To judge from his tone and demeanor, the blind man might have been discussing the weather.
“Will you join with me? Return to The Path?
Having already fallen once, it will not be easy.
Many tests, many hardships lay before you. And the Enemy is stronger than ever before.
In return, I can promise you nothing. Except perhaps the peace that is found in serving justice.”

NPC Replies:
Sentinel and Sentinel:
Over the coming week, Lancaster began Sentinel’s training in telepathy.
He stated, “Telepathy is the paranormal sense which allows one mind to directly communicate with other minds. (OOC: The maximum range (actually, radius) for the power is Intelligence x 50 feet.)

“There are four telepathic disciplines to be mastered:
(OOC: Sentinel may choose one of them to add to his abilities with this level advancement.)

“The first discipline is called “Thought Shield.” The telepath can shield his thoughts from being detected, tracked, or read at will. (OOC: The telepath with this discipline defends against Thought Probes as if their current Power score were doubled. Some non-telepathic techniques offer similar defenses against telepathy, like those of Forester and Agent America. Also, incapacitated/ nonsentient/ animal minds are immune from any Telepathic effects.)

“The second is called “Thought Scan.” The telepath can automatically detect and “read” all thoughts within his range. Language can be a partial barrier. (OOC: This costs one Power Point and an action to perform.) A person can be tracked by his thoughts. This requires continued "thought scanning" (at least once per turn, with a cost of only one Power Point per person being tracked per hour). The prey is immediately lost if it passes beyond the telepath's Range.

“The third is called “Thought Broadcast.” The telepath may read the minds of, broadcast his own thoughts to, and act as a "mental switchboard" for as many willing minds at once as he is capable of (OOC: Maximum: One person for each Intelligence point. Mental communication takes an action to set up and a Power Point each turn (spent between-turns) to maintain.).

“The fourth is called “Thought Probe.” The telepath is able to probe people's minds, sifting through them to take whatever data he desires (assuming the subject possesses the desired information). In order to attempt such a Thought Probe, the telepath must be close enough to touch the subject.”
(OOC: 1d6 turns of game time and 5 Power Points are required for the attempt. If the subject has consented to the probe, success is automatic. Otherwise, his total of (Current Power x 2) + Charisma must exceed the subject's Current Power + Charisma. If the telepath's score exceeds that of his subject, he may proceed in the Probe attempt, which is not guaranteed to succeed. A failure to successfully probe for any reason may allow the subject to feed false thoughts to the telepath.)

Lancaster wants to teach you the telepathic disciplines in the order in which they were intended.
(OOC: Your thoughts?)

NPC Replies:
Slingshot and Venus:
Venus was clearly troubled by the dilemma Slingshot posed. She did not want to betray Nanite’s confidence, especially since much of it was given via a telepathic scan.
But what she knew of the pliable powerhouse, she liked and trusted. Friendly, honest, and only concerned for Nanite’s safety.

The telepath quietly said: “She’s headed for New York City. I’m afraid that’s all I know.”
(OOC: No luck point required for that.)

Forester:
"I came here to see if you needed help," Fred tells Marksman. "And assist you I will. I am puzzled by the damage that has taken place and am concerned about your well-being."
"Some colleagues are expecting to hear back from me soon, and I don't want to cause them any undo distress." Fred continues. "I must leave briefly, but I will return here in two days, Marksman."

Forester returns to Chez CHESS to meet with Brian Grey and the other heroes about the prospect of becoming government heroes.
"I've spend much of my career dressed like one of Robin Hood's Merry Men," Forester says. "And while becoming a modern-day G-Man has its place, there are other matters that now demand my attention.”
"I may return in the weeks ahead and get back in touch with CHESS," Forester adds. "But at the moment its too early to tell."
The hero exits, and does not tell Grey other the others where he is going.

EPILOGUE: With his bow, arrows, and other supplies at hand, Fred returns to the former location of Haven and meditates. He waits for Marksman to approach...

------------------------------------

Slingshot:
Scott looked Venus in the eye. "Thank you. I can tell what it means for you to give me this information. It will do."

He knew Nanite was upset. He didn't think she would like him dropping in on her, assuming he would be find her in the first place (NY? Not likely, I'm no Batman). So he resorted to leaving a few personal ads. He dropped them in Craigslist for NY, and a few local papers.

The ad read like so: SilverLady does have a friend. Call me if you need anything, you know where to get me. Heck, lets do lunch! RubberbandMan.

[ooc]Actions regarding Nanite: If nothing comes of it, in the later days of the week, Slingshot will go down to NY for a day off of the CHESS aircraft. [/ooc]

TRAINING: [ooc] Since he's training for increased HTH accuracy, we might as well have him in the gym training, no?

I'd like to use that as an opportunity to converse with Nathan Lamb (Chess Knight), assuming he's going to the gym regularly as well, unless you have someone else, I would be sparring with? Viper, maybe? [/ooc]

VIPER AT THE BAR: [ooc] I figure that since Viper's at the bar, I might as well drop in on him [/ooc]
Seeing Viper talking to the bartender at the rec hall, Slingshot walks over and stands next to the serpentine hero. "Hey Viper. Mind if I join you?"

------------------------------------

Sentinel:
With Lancaster: “Although it seems like thought scan or thought broadcast would be the most useful in an immediate sense, it is logical that to begin to deal with other people’s thoughts and minds you must first have the greatest control over your own. If your own mind was not properly prepared it would seem you could be lost or overwhelmed by the minds of others both intentionally and accidentally. And it would be presumptuous and foolish for the student to tell the teacher the best way to teach. I would follow the path you feel most suitable for me… and he added with a smile, until the time I’m prepared to choose my own path.”

As time permits and as much as Lancaster is willing he would ask things like,
“How long ago did you begin learning about this use of our power? What prompted you to try? Are you currently working on even greater levels of the usage of our gifts?”

And if the proper time and place came up, “So what else haven’t you told me yet? Or what other secrets do you yet have to share?”

And if time and place permits, “Have you discovered more about the origins of our energies or how it all works that I know?” Naturally, depending on Lancaster’s reactions, some of these questions might be tabled for the future. At this point, Kirk is enthralled with the learning process and this additional new world opened to him, and with thinking about how much more good he can accomplish with it. Truth be told, if not for Kirk’s drive to want to help others and the need to do good, he could be quite contented spending his time learning and gathering knowledge of all sorts.

To Forester Before He Departs: “Fred, before you go, I just wanted to thank you for our conversation and your questions about me. It reminded me that sometimes we might be so busy looking ‘about’ to find the best way to do the most good that we overlook the best way being to look ‘within’.” Somehow, from what he knew about Forester, he thought he would appreciate the somewhat cryptic remark.

And he added with a genuine tone, “I know that we don’t know each other well yet, but based on how you handled yourself on our mission I think I know you enough … if you decide you need backup or assistance on those ‘other matters that need attention’ you give me a call and I've got your back. " (Kirk hands Fred his personal contact information in case he doesn’t want to go through Chess for some reason.)

On Grey’s Offer: ‘For everything there is a time,’ so said one wise man. Friends, this is our time. We’ve learned first hand the evil that can occur when no one pays enough attention to say “No! “Enough!” and draw the line. We’ve drawn that line together in our first mission. And now its time for us to stand together and make sure it isn’t crossed!

We’ve seen Chess in action and gotten to know some of them this past week. Although they may have been infiltrated by the enemy previously, now the men that remain are good men; men that want to serve the greater good, genuine heroes. We have the opportunity to work alongside them and show the world that a hero is a hero from within, whether they happen to be a super or not.

Let’s not pass up this opportunity. The world needs us; and with animals like Swastika out there, we need each other. ‘We can make sure that there is never another Miles Hudson’, Kirk said with a deep sense of conviction and a bit of anger in his voice, ‘and that the world remains free from the destructive schemes of madmen!’

Hopefully he has time:

Kirk follows up ala Slingshot; especially with his view of wanting to discourage the negative attitude of Drake and his type. He finds out which of the Knights stood down and didn’t attack him on the last mission and waits for a time when he finds him in the bar having a few drinks with his fellow Chess buddies.

After they’ve had a round or two and are feeling ‘happy’, he sends a round of drinks to the table and approaches with his own drink.

He says something along the lines of:
“(Insert name of Knight), I wanted to thank you for that huge leap of faith during that last mission. Truth be told, if you just blindly followed orders and had attacked me at that critical moment it’s likely after all we’d been through earlier that day that New York City wouldn’t be standing today. I know that couldn’t have been an easy call for you to make, especially on an unknown like me. You and your fellow Knights are true heroes and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to have served with you that day. Here’s to all of you! And he drinks.”

Kirk hopes it will all be taken well and would gladly join them if offered. He really has thought about what they did and respects that these men aren’t just drones following orders. It reminded him about Lancaster and his stories of the troops during WWII and how he worked side by side with them and had a real camaraderie. This is what Kirk would strive to work towards starting with this opportunity and going forward in the future.

If the Freedom Force moves ahead as a “sister” organization of Chess as it appears, he would request access to the dossiers of these men and look to develop friendships ala Lancaster’s example. He has genuine respect for them and doesn’t want to think of the Chess operatives simply as “suits” on the battlefield. He wants to actively promote the idea of heroes be it super or not.

Viper:
Hey Molloy. How do you think CHESS got infiltrated? I mean they seem to run a pretty good show here, where was the hole in the tent?

This Drake fellow, can he be trusted? He doesn't smile too much and that worries me. I don't think he likes us tight wearers either.

I'm a little concerned about Grey. He seems a hard man and a patriot, but Doc Swazi got to him, got to him a bit too easy if you ask me. What do you think?

What's with this Venus chick? I tried inviting her for a drink and all I got was a slap in the face, something must be wrong if she's resisting my charms!

So CHESS had a few bad apples, think there could be more? Is there anyone left onboard that were friendly with those bad apples?

------------------------------------

Lightning Strike:
Response about Freedom Force and working for Chess: "Although Mr. Grey's offer intrigues me, there are a lot of things going on that I need to take care of and I don't want the government's agenda taking away from that. In addition, although their facilities are outstanding, I am not sure I want my work monitored or exploited.
I am more than willing to participate in missions like the one we just completed where millions of lives are at stake but I don't want to be a glorified government policeman. Grey seems to know how to contact me, so if the need arises I am sure he will be able to find me."

Invention Point / Luck Point: LS would like to expand upon what he did when using the radar as a carrier wave. In theory this could be expanded to any signal, radio, cell phone, television, etc. I would love to be able to materialize out of someone’s cell phone or walkie talkie. The downside would be that I would probably fry the device as I would easily overload it. Which could make something another one way trip but then I would just need to locate another signal. This probably works out almost like a teleportation power but with more limitations.

Ongoing Investigations: LS wants to investigate Silas Caine's connection to the Uber Men and see if I can trace how his technology was on the Star Giant and I will continue to investigate the murder of my wife.

------------------------------------

Sentinel:
"Strike, I think you’re missing the point of what is being offered here. I think we all know about "some of the things" that you need to take care of ... Grey can assist with that ... where will you get greater resources at your disposal?
And whatever you decide regarding Grey's offer, my offer to assist you personally remains when you need it.

But if your concerned with the government "exploiting" you or making you into a policeman that just follow rules without thinking, then welcome to the club. But the best policeman don't follow blindly ... or the best agents ... take a look at those brave Chess agents that thought for themselves and helped us save several cities! Heroes in their own right Strike!

It's my biggest reservation about this whole thing myself, being asked to do something that I don't think is right ... but when the Freedom Force was affiliated with the government it was a loose affiliation with Grey as the liaison. Certainly we'd request the same ... and if they tried to make us into something that we shouldn't be, then we could choose to walk then. Why not try?

We're not simply going to be a super-powered version of the Knights; although perhaps a sister agency to Chess, we should be operating under our own set of directives and with a wide margin of autonomy. Perhaps we can even have different tiers of operatives, those who can be day to day like me and those available on a "on call" basis? Think about it and see if it can work for you before declining.

We need you... and you need us. Who better to be on board than someone like you who will stand up and say "no" if they push us too far? We need your conscience here ... and certainly the assistance available to you here would help make your "public conscience" as pure as your personal one.

Part of my hopes for what we build here would be to "assist" heroes with situations like yours and to prevent worse from happening to people with gifts like us who end up being exploited by others and prevented from doing the good they want to do.”

------------------------------------

Blue Comet:
First Jeff, BC will hold all his Hero Points for another day. He'll still, somewhat tepidly, work with Doc Rocket and others on his amnesia, but he won't spend any point at this time. He'll also refuse anything particularly invasive or something that would leave him vulnerable (nothing where he'll feel out of control of the situation or test).

He thinks he's figured out who the good guys are (CHESS), but when it comes to specific people he's less sure. Some faces around CHESS make him nervous, even angry and he's not yet sure why. This leads to the last part. When finally cornered about his opinion on a new Freedom Force he replies with the following (whether to Slingshot or Grey):
"Look. I think this is where I need to be; more importantly, this I where I want to be. I can make a difference here. I've proved that over the last few weeks if only to myself. I feel like I'm finally doing the good I was meant to do all along. But, I'm still trying to figure out who I am, and I don't mean that in a 1960's kind of way. I mean I really don't know who I am. But I know who I want to be and who I don't.
I want to stay with CHESS. I want to be your teammate and ultimately maybe your friend. What I DO NOT want is to be is Freedom Force Junior. I can not and will not fly under that banner. I have my reasons. I think. Look I know this is hard to explain, but I . feel this. that this is. So important to what I have to do.
(sigh)
I know I must sound crazy, but I think it has something to do with coming all this way and not wanting to be looked down on as a replacement... someone filling in until the real superheroes show back up. I'm not here to hold anyone's cowl (looks up at a portrait of the old FF on the wall)
(sigh)
Bottom line, if you assemble under another name I will fight with you, if you'll have me. If you assemble under (looking up at an old FF flag) THAT banner, then I can't. I'll still be at your beck and call to the extent you could allow a non member, but I will remain just that. I'm sorry. (walks away)"

------------------------------------

Sentinel:
As Comet finishes speaking and appears as if he is turning to walk away, Kirk quickly responds:
"Comet. This is our time, our team ... out choices and decisions. And you are a part of it! If the name Freedom Force bothers you then we choose another name. Now isn't the time to think about walking away, and from what you said, you really don't want to do that.
We aren't going to be replacements waiting for the real deal to show up. We are the Real Deal. If the "Freedom Force" name makes you feel that way, then we'll make it be something else.
Years ago, when people with gifts like ours first appeared they came together for a common goal for the good of humanity. It was dire times then, when Hitler first rose to power, and back then the line between good and evil was clearly drawn. As Hitler and his henchmen wanted to dominate and control the world, these men and women joined forces to proclaim that they would never allow it; they took on the name of the "Liberty League". They used their powers in the pursuit of freedom and rallied the efforts of all good men to be heroes in the war on evil, with or without super powers. And they wouldn't stop until the threat of Hitler and his cohorts was gone and men did, indeed, have Liberty. They won that war!
Today the forces of evil hide in the darkness and are harder to find, but we know all too well they are out there. The need to shine our light on them, to force them out into the open where they can no longer harm humanity is as great now as it was then, perhaps greater.
Swastika's manipulations over the years have made those brave men and women all but forgotten. But you've worked side by side with some of them in our last mission, men lock Sgt Stone and Doc Rocket - imagine what they once were and inspired back then. Let's bring them and what they did back out of obscurity and beat Swastika again in a figurative way in doing so, and let's continue the tradition they started.

Why not the "Liberty League?!"

Let's proclaim liberty from evil men that want to take advantage of others and hurt humanity.
Only let's make sure that what we put together is strong enough, yes resilient enough, to continue despite whatever the forces out there may plot against us.
As he continued he looked at the camera in the room, knowing Drake was likely listening and continued,
"And unfortunately, even some good men, would judge us just because we have gifts and that makes us different, as if they hadn't learned in the 60's that blind prejudice was wrong, and that all individuals should be judged on who they are in their hearts and not based on an attribute they may happen to possess ... for them, let's show them the good we can do and perhaps they'll relearn that lesson. Yes, liberty from prejudice my friends."

"Men, the Liberty League!"

As Kirk completed these words, part of him was surprised by the passion he spoke with, and by how much it meant to him. He would love to honor those men of the League and to continue their tradition, but he knew that something was even more important ... that someone here had to show passion for what was happening here to inspire the others ... Kirk was fearful that none of these men thus far had enough drive and concern to get this thing started ... he wasn't sure if what he had was enough. But in his heart of hearts he was sure that if things fell apart here, if something wasn't started this day, there would be a great void for good lacking in this world, and all would pay for it in the near future ...

Sentinel questions Lancaster:
In their training facility, Kirk and Lancaster hovered in mid air, cross-legged, facing each other.
Kirk asks, “How long ago did you begin learning about this use of our power?”

Without moving his lips, Lancaster said: “When I was your age, my father taught it to me. It must be a more complex ability for us, as it comes to us later.”

Kirk said, “What prompted you to try?”

“I kept pushing to explore the limits of our Energy Sense and it raised more and more questions.

“Are you currently working on even greater levels of the usage of our gifts?”

“You know me well enough to know that I will always be pushing myself to be my personal best… and you too, for that matter.”

“Have you discovered more about the origins of our energies?”

“The energy originates from within us, not from another dimension or outside source.”

“So what else haven’t you told me yet? What other secrets do you yet have to share?”

Kirk could feel Lancaster’s smile within his mind. “Time will tell. Now, I want you to repeat what we practiced this morning. Concentrate. Make your mind like a fortress. Prevent me from reading your thoughts.…”

Kirk meets Nathan Lamb who might be the oldest, most sanguine among them.

Viper said: “This Drake fellow, can he be trusted? He doesn't smile too much and that worries me. I don't think he likes us tight wearers either.’

Molloy cleared his moist throat. The sound served as a laugh. “Nah, he sure don’t. And it wasn’t always that way. Seems mebbe six months ago, seven, he started to hate heroes but good. Don’t know what changed him.”

“So CHESS had a few bad apples, think there could be more? Is there anyone left onboard that were friendly with those bad apples?”

“Mebbe…” murmured Molloy suspiciously. “…Dr. Fenton was as thick as thieves, he was, with them rogue, so-called ‘Black Knights.’ I’ll bet they turn up somethin’ on that one.”

The continued investigation of Strike’s wife’s murder will be the subject of the coming issues.
I need to know what methods of investigation does Strike employ?
Is he questioning people as Lightning Strike?
Is he questioning people in his new secret identity? What is that, please?
Is he investigating via the internet?
Is he breaking into police evidence rooms?
Is he stealing the autopsy report on his wife?
Just give me a general sense of his modus operandi, thanks!

Re: GYM TRAINING: Great idea.
Sgt. Stone, a master of HTH combat, will give you some pointers if you're looking for them… especially when it comes to leveraging super strength while managing a large body mass. Stone, who must be in his 80's, seems to have a good time beneath his gruff, tough guy demeanor.
Nathan Lamb can spar with you. He's fast and strong for a human, great footwork and a good right hook too. But he'll have a hell of a time dealing with your reach.

The Centurions
The Gladiators
The Enforcers

Dear Editor,

I'm loving the new FF with all the plot twists and character development and I was thrilled to hear about the rest of the comic line in this latest issue of FF ... but ...

hey, my newsstand doesn't seem to carry all the other great comics advertised in the latest issue of FF? Where can I get them? Can you get my newsstand to carry them?

E Nelson Bridwell

OOC:
I've been tossing the names around further the past couple of days and this morning I too was focused on Vanguard as the best choice from the list so far (after Sentinel's Liberty League of course), so its funny that Chris went that way too.

From the single word group names it was the only one I liked. However, being the DC fan I'm used to more than one word group names and they seem to roll off the tongue nicer and give you initials to call the group "FF, JLA, JSA, etc"

As some possible alternates to just "Vanguard" how about Freedom's Vanguard or Vanguards of Freedom if we want to play off Freedom Force's name. Vanguard Alliance

Kirk would likely suggest Liberty's Vanguard or Vanguards of Liberty.
I could definitely live with just "Vanguard" if that was preferred.

About the only other one appealing to me was Guardians (after getting over the bad connotations of the Guardians of the Universe), but only if paired with something else like Guardians of Freedom, Liberty's Guardians or such.

Lightning Strike:
GM wrote: So I need to know what methods of investigation does Strike employ?
· Is he questioning people as Lightning Strike?
Yes, I will question underworld types in costume, using it as an intimidation like Batman. Non-underworld types, see below.
· Is he questioning people in his new secret identity? And what is that, please?
I have sort of lost track about that. Didn't I say I was hoping to have Grey set me up with some identity and then try to work in Silas Caine's company? The name can be Kirby Lee :)
· Is he investigating via the internet?
Definitely.
· Is he breaking into police evidence rooms?
Yes, I will enter in through the electrical system at night.
· Is he stealing the autopsy report on his wife?
Yes, but copying it, not stealing it. Entering in the same manner.

OOC: OK, I will weigh in with my vote. Paladin is out because that was a character from the bygone era. I lean toward Strike Force but with obvious reasons. I want to go with a military theme so how about Liberty Task Force!!
Now I hope I really messed things up.

Slingshot:
OOC:
Vanguard Force is a little meh.. Team Vanguard makes me think of a bad reality TV show.
Vanguard Squad?
Vanguard Patrol?
Vanguard Rangers?
Vanguard Commandos?
How about Storm Troopers?
I'm not sure I'd want to have a completely military feel to the name. Vanguard is itself military the rest is pretty redundant.
Just my 2 cents.

Lightning Strike:
After a conference with the recovered Agent Grey, Lightning Strike emerges and consults with the remainder of the group.
"Although it has taken a little bit of Agent Grey's persuasion, I have made the commitment to be part of this group. I am sure that although this group of inexperienced agents could be molded into a cohesive fighting force, I can not aid in that endeavor but I commit myself to
fight alongside each of you as the need exposes itself. Please honor my privacy as I honor yours and be sure that I will always be by your sides as long as the cause is righteous and we fight for freedom and justice.”

NPC Replies:
Lightning Strike: Intimidating underworld thugs while in costume lands Strike nothing. They don’t know nothin’ about the Archer murders, or about Silas Caine. “You mean da billionaire Silas Caine?” one asks from the dumpster Strike slammed him in.
(OOC: Strike: Months ago, you established a connection between Caine, the Archer murders and organized crime through hyper data-tracking on the internet. Your unique powers enabled you to map underworld money laundering operations that sent money to offshore accounts in the Caymans and Switzerland that only you could tie to Caine. Then suddenly, one day, all the accounts emptied and evaporated. Your evidence was gone, and even if it wasn’t, none of it was admissible in court. You have never uncovered ‘human intelligence’ that links Caine to any wrongdoing.)

Police reports on the Archer murders indicate breaking and entering: Looks like the door to the lab was opened with a crowbar. Autopsy results on Mrs. Steven Archer have the cause of death as burns and smoke inhalation from the chemo-electrical explosion that burned down the lab.

Classified CHESS files have this information:
The lab explosion occurred when the electrical current was STOPPED. Archer’s experiment required steady electrical current (LS knows this to be true). When that current was interrupted, the experiment exploded. It’s unclear how the current could have been stopped. There was no “off” switch. The wiring was still in place, and the building current was fine.

Slingshot: Slingy gets a lot of attention from folks as he walks through New York City.
His email reply to Nanite was sent somehow, even without an email address.
A reply comes back soon enough, still without an email address. “Lunch sounds great.” Nanite and Slingshot plan a get together for next week.

Sentinel: Sentinel has successfully completed his training in telepathic defense.
Sentinel learns that Doc Rocket and Sgt. Stone have agreed to stay on with CHESS in an unofficial, advisory capacity to the new superhero team! Sentinel’s enthusiasm was a big part of their decision.
Stone is his usual gruff self, saying he’s only in it for the paycheck. But Doc is openly excited at the opportunity to work with superheroes again!
